Vice- president Alben W. Barkley (left) is shown in Los Angeles
where he urged local community leaders to intensify their efforts
on behalf of the United Jewish Appeal drive. The vice-president,
who has frequently voiced his support of large-scale immigration
into Israel and increased immigration of DP's to the United States,
tailed for an intensified drive for the UJA to make possible the
rehabilitation and resettlement of the homeless Jews of Europe
• and North Africa. Shown with Barkley is Jack L. Warner, presi-
dent of the United Jewish Welfare Fund of Los Angeles, who is
heading one of the largest oommunity drives in the country on
behalf of the United Jewish Appeal's three constituent agencies,
the United Palestine Appeal, the Joint Distribution Committee and
the United Service fee New Americans.

Catholic Yank Is Skipper
of Israel's Largest Vessel

NEW YORK—(Special)— The
Skipper of the Haifa, Israel's larg-
est ocean-going vessel, is Scottish-
born Terrance Bond, an American
Catholic.
"This is a happy ship," he said
here. "The boys think more of
their jobs than ordinary seamen
— because they're working for
something they own, I guess.
`It makes quite a difference.
The general run of seamen re-
gard their work as just a job.
Here you can get the boys out at
any time and there's no crying
about overtime."
SABBATH OFF
Bond hasn't tripped over Jew-
ish tradition, either.
"I giye them Friday and Satur-
day off instead of Saturday and
Sunday," he said. "Just a change
in days, that's all. And I don't
miss pork at all. I'm the 'Chief
Rabbi'," he joked.
The Haifa began as a Canadian
victory ship and has just begun
her second 11,000-mile round-trip
between the U. S. and Israel.
Already, Bond has laid the

foundations for a rich new vo-
cabulary.
NOT FOR PRINT
"I've picked up a few words of
Hebrew, but I can't repeat them
for publication. They're hardly
words to set in print." he grinned.
The Jewish crew is very proud
of the Haifa. Aaron Stark, able-
bodied seaman observed:
"The Haifa is part of the land.
She represents the nation and is
part of it."
Herzl Schachnai, second mate,
who wore a gold Star of David
on a chain around his neck, ex-
plained:
"We all feel at home all the
time. We never feel we're abroad,
even though Israel is 6,000 miles
away."
HIS CONTRIBUTION
Purser Michael Weisshar of
New York, one of three Ameri-
cans aboard said:
"We get one-third the wages
paid on American ships, so there
must be some compensation. It is
that we're contributing to the
start of a new nation."

Lehman Balks
on Candidacy

Dear Editor:
Your editorial of this week
on the American Chalutzim
movement is a "knockout." It is
admirable, courageous, sane, lib-
eral and American.
You have started something
which, it is my conviction, will
put you at the head of a move-
ment of AMERICAN .Zionists in
the country as opposed to New
York Zionists who are now def-
initely swayed by east-European
notions which do not fit into
American life.
You are doing a tremendously
important job. I used this edi-
torial as a mail and telegraphic
Story because I consider it NEWS.
WILLIAM ZUKERMAN,
Editor, Jewish
World News Service,
New York, N. Y.
P.S.—Have you noticed that a
kw English-Jewish newspapers
have taken your stand on limita-
do& of immigration to Israel?
W.Z.

NEW YORK—(Special)—For-
mer Gov. Herbert H. Lehman
may reject pleas by Democratic
leaders that he run for United
States senator because he does
not want to be subjected to a
"whispering campaign" by Cath-
olics, he is reported to have told
friends.

Lehman has been attacked by
Catholics because he was a mem-
ber of a committee that opposed
the New York schools' ban on
'The Nation." The magazine was
barred because of articles alleg-
edly criticising the Roman Cath-
olic church.

Paul E. Fitzpatrick. Democratic
state chairman, said that Catholic
opposition to Lehman would be
very small.

GIBRALTAR JEW HONORED
GIBRALTAR (Special)—David
Benaim has been awarded the
Order of the British Empire for
his public services.

LAKE SUCCESS—(YIVNA)—
The Sternist Group, the Palestine
organization which conducted a
reign of terror against the man-
datory power prior to the estab-
lishment of the Jewish State, is
planning to revive its terroristic
activities. But this time the cam-
paign will be not against Great
Britain, but against the Soviet
and pro-Soviet governments in
eastern Europe which have re-
cently suspended or curtailed
Jewish immigration to Israel.
This report is contained in an
article in the United Nations
World. The article says that the
Sternists have already opened
headquarters in Italy and have
sent out death-threats to a num-
ber of Communist officials in Po-
land, Hungary and Romania.
According to• the article, the
Sternists are planning to kill: 1)
Communist propagandists who are
responsible for the suspension of
Jewish immigration to Israel. 2)
Communist propagandists who
are responsible for _the revival
of anti-Zionism and anti-Semit-
ism in east-European countries.
3) Jewish Communists who sup-
port the new anti-immigration
measures. 4) high government of-
ficials of the pro-Communist
countries abroad.
The UN World. a non-sensa-
tional publication, takes a serious
view of the matter and warns
that such a revival of terrorism
might lead to grave consequences
against all foreigners and partic-
ularly against Jews. It may start
a chain of reprisals and even lead
to mass pogroms, the magazine
warns.

Farming
Subsidy
Revealed

TEL AVIV— (Special) — A
Four-Year Plan which would ad-
mit 750,000 new immigrants to
Israel was revealed this week by
Prime Minister David Ben Gur-
ion. Of the number, 100,000
would be settled in agricultural
villages.
Five hundred new colonies
would be built in an area of 800,-
000 acres, he told the farm work-
ers union of the Histadrut.
An intensified farming pro-
gram is in the making, the prime
minister said, which would not
only feed the Jewish State but
would also permit some export of
farm products, Implicit in the
plan are direct subsidies to farm-
ers from the government, he re-
vealed.
PLAN 250,000 HOMES
The Four-Year Plan calls for
the erection of 250,000 homes and
new incentives for the investment
of both Jewish and non-Jewish
private capital in the growing in-
dustry of the new State.
Government circles were stir-
red by the report from London
that the parliamentary expert on
oil had recommended the reopen-
ing of the Haifa oil refineries.
Parliament was told that the use
of the refineries is important to
the relief of the dollar crisis in
England and would save the
British $50,000,000 annually.
The refineries were closed
down a year ago when Iraq end-
ed the flow of oil from the Mosul
fields upon the outbreak of war
in Palestine. Resumption of use
of the pipelines is opposed by the
Arabs as a gesture of their con-
tinuing hostility to the Israeli
State.
PERSECUTION IN IRAQ
The Jewish Agency reported
only this week in Jerusalem that
the condition of the Jews of Iraq
had worsened, with hundreds
thrown into prison on the charge
that they are Zionists.
