Efficient Staff
Essential to
a Good Cainp

The following is the second
article by David Aptekar. presi 2.
dent of the Michigan Camping
Association. explaining the funda-
mentals of a good children's
tamp:
An old adage among camp
people holds that "a camp is no
better than its staff.' Camp
people are less impressed with
the facilities (though none belie
their importance) than they are
with an alert. experienced, skill-
ed, mature staff.
They realize that careful se-
lection of counselors mean the
date' enee between efficiency and
inefficiency, between an effective
and reasonable realization of the
aims of the camp and a flounder-
ing experience for your child.
Staff and director should be
carefully sized up by the parents
as they are the means through
which the parents can expect the
fulfillment of the potentialities
their child.
How does one judge a staff
without a detailed study? Here
are some hints: Do the children
seem proud of their counselors or
resentful?
Does the counselor staff include
a large percent of young, inex-
perienced people? Is the average
age of staff in the twenties?
Is your child expanding the
horizons of his interests? Is he
thrilled with his achievements?
Does he seem proud ()Mk bunk
and his camp? Does he seem an
accepted member of the cabin
group? These are good evidences
that the staff is doing a good job.
