Dr. Ralph J, Biutche, acting mediator on Palestine for the United
Nations, is presented with Volume IV of the "Palestine Yearbook
and Israeli Annual" by Miss Sophie A. Udin, director and li-
brarian of Zionist archives and library of the Keren Ilayesod
(Palestine Foundation Fund), editor of the yearbook and Abraham
Krumbein, treasurer of the Keren Ilayesod. The "Palestine Year-
book and Israeli Annual" is published by the Zionist Organization
of America and Keren Hayesod. Left to right: Krumbein, Bunehe

could learn liberty and indi-
vidualism from the United States.
"We, can all also learn much
from Russia and Czechosio.vakia,"
he declared," without becoming
a satellite state.
The confetence decided to push
a Chalutz movement in the Ne-
gev and in the frontier settle-
ments.
Meanwhile a rift has developed
in the Israeli Communist party as
a result of the conviction of seven
Zionist leaders in Hungary on
charges of having aided illegal
mass migration of Jews to Israel.
The Hungarian section of the
party quit in protest over the
convictions.
TO ETERNAL REST
A somber note was added to
Israel's life when the ashes of
200,000 German and Austrian
Jews who were murdered by the
Nazis were b:ought to eternal
rest in Jerusalem after funeral
services which saw tens upon
thousands of Jews weeping like
children.
When the coffin bearing the
ashes passed through Tel Aviv,
the procession of mourners was
so huge that the police were forc-
ed to stop all traffic.
Later the casket was taken to
Rehovot, where Dr. Weizmann
delivered a moving eulogy. He
said the calamity which had be-
fallen German and Austrian
Jewry was beyond description by
words, adding that the grave in
which the ashes are to repose
"will serve as a reminder to all
Jews of the happenings of our
times and as a warning to Israelis,
and to Jews abroad, of the deeds
of the enemy."
JOIN IN KADDISII
When the casket reached Jerus-
alem. it was met by Joseph
Sprinzak, speaker of the Knesset,
Mayor Daniel Auster, Sephardic
Chief Rabbi Ben Zion Usiel and
by members of the Jewish Agen-
cy executive.
At the Yeshurun Synagogue,
where final funeral services were
held, Rabbi Usiel. delivered a
brief eulogy and the traditional
"El Moley Rachamim" prayer
for the dead.
As the Rabbi began reciting the
Kaddish, the 5.000 persons at the
services joined him as if in one
voice, shedding tears. Some were

seen rending their garments in
accordance with Jewish tradi-
tion.
Slowly the cortege proceeded
to the SanhedrIa quarter and
there the coffin was lowered into
a temporary cemetery. Thus they

NO CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
TEL AVIV - (YIVNA) - An
agreement has been reached by
the representatives of all parties
of Israel not to introduce capital
punishment into the new State
except for the crime of treason in
war time. Life imprisonment
will be the maximum punish-
ment for capital crimes. It is re-
ported that the religious parties
were thiefly responsible for this
highly humanitarian act. for ac-
cording to the Rabbis capital pun-
ishment is contradictory to Tal-
mudic law,

CHRISTIAN FRIENDSHIP
MUNICH-(YIVNA)-The con-
ference of the recently-founded
"Society for Jewish-Christian
Friendship" was attended by 112
delegates-among them Catholic
priests and Protestant ministers
from Germany and abroad, as
well as 18 reform Rabbis, who
were at pains to stress that they
consider themselves Germans
first, merely being adherents of
the Jewish faith. The conference
dealt with the question of grow-
ing anti-Semitic activities in Ger-
many and other European coun-
tries.

LINKED TO ZIONISTS
BUDAPEST - (YIVNA) - The
Budapest Communist organ "Vas-
ernap" in an article attacking the
recently-arrested Hungarian ex-
Foreign Minister Laszlo Rajk, ac-
cused him of having been sym-
pathetic toward the Zionist move-
ment, The same newspaper also
charged him with having aided
the mass-smuggling of Jews out
of Hungary to enable them to
go to Israel, and that he main-
tained contact with the convicted
Zionist leaders in liungary.
