Thursday, June 23, 1949 DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE Page Three STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL Blames Truman for the U. S. Pressure on Israel By PHINEAS J. BIRON Israeli government has no alternative but to reject the plan. TT WAS A SERIOUS looking James G. McDonald who handed Israeli Fbreign Minister Moshe Sharett a note from the U. S. State Department, according to Drew Pearson. The scene took place a few weeks ago in Tel Aviv but the .• consequences of Ambassador McDon- ald's mission on behalf of his govern- ment might be far-reaching. The regular news agencies did not carry the text of this diplomatic note but Pearson who is usually reliably in- formed quotes the last paragraph which is very, very strongly worded. This last paragraph says that. un - less the government of Israel listen to the "friendly advice of the United States government, the U. S. govern- Biron ment will regretfully be forced to the conclusion that a complete revision of its attitude toward Israel has become unavoidable." Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this drastic step by Washington is the fact that President Truman is not only backing this ultimatum but is actually the prime-mover who is pushing it. • • • • MR. TRUMAN'S PRESSURE is exercised on two issues, the boundaries between Israel and Arab lands and Arab refugees. In other words the Bernadotte plan is making its reappearance. And of course the Washington, London and Rome are working to- gether. The political clouds rolling over the new Jewish State are dark and ominous. (Editor's Note: The White House denied that President Truman had demanded the admission of a large number of refugees into Israel. The problem was being handled through regular diplomatic channels, a spokesman said., • • • NATHAN tIPRIN PLOT TO WRECK the Is- raeli-Arab Lausanne peace conference is as much motivated by anti-Semitism as by political considerations. One astute reader of Artzt's manuscript characterized Azel "a mixture of Danny Kaye, Harpo Marx and Mischa Auer?' A LETTER from J. Greenbaum, N. Y., reads: "May I add the following observation to' supplement your correspondent's objections to UJA funds being used for political activities of the American Jewish Com- mittee. I entirely approve of this attitude and wish to add my protest Besides, I understand that the Treasury Department of the U. S. might very well object too. Thank you, Mr. Greenbaum, for a valuable bit of information. .. • More comments on this vital topic are most welcome. • • • The Israeli government is in a tough spot. It needs the good will of Washington but it cannot, dare not pay the price which Mr. Truman demands. And when we say Truman, we mean, Truman, Bevin and the Vatican. OFF THE RECORD THE "Tax exemption granted to the UJA specifies that the funds collected by the UJA are to be used for relief and rehabilitation work. Well, the activities of the American Jewish Committee do not come under this heading. They are no less political than the work of the congressional committee on un-American activi- ties. The Israeli government is having its hands full with the Jewish immigration that is spilling 30,000 men, women and children onto the shores of Israel every month. It is desperately in need of funds, huge funds. Instead of help from the U. S. government it is receiving threats and ultimatums. reservations, call Gel- man, TO. 6-8075.
