Named President
Berry Renews
Plea to Givers
Louis Berry, Allied Jewish
Campaign Chairman, this week
sent a special appeal to all mem-
bers of the Jewish community
who have not yet made their
pledge.
"I know that if I could talk to
you in person," Berry said, "and
tell you about the wonderful
work that is being done in Israel
to provide for those of our peo-
ple who are• arriving in the new
State at the rate of 1,000 a day
. . . about the fine programs we
are maintaining here in Detroit
for our children, our old people,
ourselves and our neighbors .. .
if I could tell you, in person,
about the three score services
that are embodied in the Great-
est Homecoming in History and
in building a Better Caninunity
Home, then I know you would
give and give generously."
In addition to the mail appeal,
campaign workers are continuing
to visit their prospects.
At their workers' party June
17, Women's Division workers
made additional reports bringing
the total raised in general so-
licitation to 100 percent of their
1049 quota, $110,000.

BUDAPEST—(Special)—Seven
leaders in Hungary have been
sentenced from six months to
three years in prison for alleg-
edly aiding Jews to emigrate
to Israel. Two others were ac-
quitted and a tenth still faces

The accused denied the charges
that they had assisted 3,500 Hun-
garians to flee the country with-
out a passport, a serious offense
under the new pro-Communist
code.
In the meantime, four leading
Jewish organizations in Hungary
categorically denied charges by
