STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL

Chides Defense Bodies for Optimism on Bigotry

By PHINEAS J. IIIRON
FROhl A SURVEY made by the noted scholar and
author Max Lerner, it would seem that anti-
Semitism in the United States "is about as bad as it
was at the end of the war.
Dr. Lerner is very definite in his
conclusions. He believes that a su-
preme effort is being made now "to
mobilize and unite in a single holding .
company all anti-Semitic groups in ,
the country. If this is true, and we
have no reason to doubt Dr. Lerner,
then all this smooth talk about anti-
Jewish feeling being on the decline is
a lot of banana oil. Yet our defense
agencies do not seem very much
alarmed about the state of democracy
Bison
in the union. Nor do we hear any
•protests against the expansion of the Ku Klux Klan
in northern states.

STETSON KENNEDY, perhaps the foremost ex-
pert on the KKK, said the other day that the Klan
had re-established itself in at least 20 states. It is
an open secret that the KKK is co-ordinating its activi-
ties with such groups as the Columbiana. the American
Shore Patrol and the Gentile Army.
Gen, George Van Horn Mostly, who draws a

general's pension from the U. S. Government, is one
again one of the key figures in efforts to unite the
hatemongers in our country.
And while a revitalized anti-Jewish movement
spreads all over the 48 states, our most important
and most expensive defense organization, the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee, is sending out releases to the
press about fantastic stories of anti-Semitism in the
Soviet Union. Strange indeed,

MICHAEL WAGER will be featured player in the
new Helen Hayes production, opening on Broadway
this fall. Well, if you don't see the point in this item,
please take note that Michael Wager is none other than
Mendy Weisgal, son of Meyer W. Weisgal, administra-
tive head of the Weizmann Institute of Science, who
has just departed with his family to establish perma-
nent residence in Rochovoth, Israel.

THE DELEGATION sent by the American Jewish
Congress to Washington did not meet with much suc-
cess. We are told that when the members of the delega- —
lion submitted the AJC data on the failure of our gov-
ernment to carry through de-nazification in Germany,
several senators were not very polite to our emissaries.
One senator in particular raised his voice to a high
crescendo and shouted: "What more do you want, now

It was in the fall of 1947. Mr.

that we gave you a Jewish State in Palestine?”
We wonder whether the Congress delegates sub-
mitted to our State Department a dossier on the
recent German Industrial Fair in New York. That
dossier would have included the astonishing facts that
several of the Nazi firms invited to exhibit their wares
in our country were not just Nazi-owned but were
actually firrns stolen from Jewish owners during the
war.
