Fair Grounds
No Place for
Making Merry

By MITCHELL TENDLER
HE SEVENTH RACE was his-
tory, Sun Ilerod beat out the
odds-on Porter's Broom in a pic-
ture, and after the screech fol-
lowing the posting of the result
had died down,
all was quiet.

glances, all five
of us. It was the
only thing we

us money.
The unspoken
consensus of
opinion was that
Tendler we were all out
of our heads for not having gone
to Woodhull Lake instead of
wearing out shoe leather walking
to the mutual windows and blow-
ing in 20 cents a throw on in-
digestible hot dogs.

Lt. Roy F. Green Auxiliary will
stage a Father's Day program
Tuesday. The group donated $100
to the Memorial Home, Minnie
Merman, hospital chairman, an-
nounced that 29 patients from the
Marine hospital will be taken to
the ball game, Aug. 10. Two
deck chairs were purchased for
the veterans at the hospital. Edith
Hoffman was elected department
chaplain.

SUDDENLY MILT flushed, and
his hand trembled as he pointed
to the odds-board and then to his
racing program.
It's the heat, we all thought.
Why, oh why, hadn't we gone to
Woodhull?
We walked over sympatheti-
cally, with the intent of taking
him gently out of the sun and
under the grandstand. But now
he had found his voice. "Look,
look, look!" he whispered ecstat-
ically. We looked.
