government's handling of the im-
migration problem, quite apart
from the money shortage.
An opinion is growing among
serious-minded people of all par-
ties that the present policy of the
government of opening the doors
of Israel wide and admitting
everyone without limitation is
wrong.
A little country which has lain
waste for millennia cannot take
in overnight 10 times as many im-
migrants in proportion as Amer-
ica did in the heyday of its im-
migration. There are natural
limits of space, of resources and
of the economic capacity of the
country for absorption.
BASED ON POLITICS
The government's present pol-
icy is obviously based on politics
more than on economics. There is
on one hand, a wish to prove the
truth of the old Zionist assertion
that Israel can take in every Jew
who wants to settle, and on the
other, to present the world with
an accomplished fact of a big
Jewish population.
But this is a political gamble
which may do irreparable dam-
age to the new State and, since
in Israel people are less sensitive
• to criticism than Jews are in this
country, conviction is growing up
there and is gradually reaching
these shores also that unlimited
immigration is not entirely a
blessing.
Perhaps, there was some truth
in the claim of the mandatory
power that the country can ab-
sorb only a certain number of
immigrants and no more.

their prices by the Council and
there is deep resentment at this
prospect.
The Council reply is that the
butcher shops are a quasi-public
agency because of the religious
aspects and must submit to
stronger public controls sooner
or later. In addition, there is the
still unproved but fairly well ar-
gued charge that many butchers
have been gouging the public
systematically since before the
war.
HARM THEMSELVES
The Council asserts that in the
latter instance the butchers have
been doing themselves irremedi-
able harm since many housewives
have been abandoning Kashruth
because of allegedly high prices—
and once gone, they never return.
As a result, while the Jewish
population has been growing and
spreading, the Council points out,
