sister, Mrs. Patricia Martin.

Yaltrzeit's
Spirituality'
Is Depicted

(Continued from Page 4)
ing there should be no scoffing at
Yahrzeit Jews.
"A Jew is Jewishly at his nob-
blest in the hour of his Yahrzeit.
He's alone with God and his
mother. It's not like trying to be
worshipful in a big crowd in the
Synagogue on Yom Kippur. No
distractions."
Mr. I was thinking that Yahr-
zeit offered a more satisfactory
way of being Jewish than most
of the other media. The many
ways that are being offered make
a lot of confusion..
The spirituality that is of
Yahrzeit is the complete reward
of being Jewish, he said. It left
no doubts, no confusion. It was
satisfying and Mr. I could feel
that God was along with him
this evening in the soft spring-
time.
He had been harassed by all
the salesmen trying to sell their
different way of being Jewish.
All this clamor, this shouting, all
summoning him to some par-
tciular pattern of Judaism.
-

A MATTER OF DRIVES
IT HAS COME to seem that
Judaism is a matter of "drives."
All kinds of drives. Brochures
arriving in every mail, calling
on Mr. I to give money for this
or that. They were saying to him:
- Give! Be Jewish by donations."
Yes, Jewish life has had to do
much with signing checks. With
many Judaism was nothing more
than that.
"So as I was walking along I
came to the idea that there should
be a new deal in American Jew-
ish life," Mr. I said. "We have
no excuse to live as Jews just
for the purpose of signing cheeks.
Thank God for Yahrzeit."
Mr. I's new deal would go back
to the essence of Judaism that
he had found this evening in the
Synagogue when he sat there
with his mother and God.
"That kind of spirituality," he
said. "That's what I mean. We
are the ones who found God in
the first place and now we've lost
him. We have been so busy sign-
ing checks for this and that,
listening to the appeals."
