friend," or "To my old geology
professor ..."
Then there's a novelist who
dedicated each of his three books
to his wife—only each time it
was a different mate. Now his
fourth novel awaits a new bride.
When Pietro Mascagni got an-
gry at the critics for their luke-
warm reception of this "Cavalleria
Rusticana," he dedicated his sub-
sequeM opera, "The Masks," in
this fashion: "To myself, with dis-
tinguished esteem and unalter-
able satisfaction."
