`Nazi-Like' Anti-Semitism in Soviet Is Denied

THE

By PHINEAS J. BIRON

NEW YORK World Telegram is running a
a series of articles under the heading "Russia
Using Nazi Tricks Against Jews." The articles are
authored by Frederic' Woltman,
whose close connection with the
American Jewish League Against
Communism are well known and
whose still closer connection with
the American Jewish Committee is
acknowledged.
Woltman, claiming to base his ma-
terial on documents from . the re-
search files of the American Jewish
Committee, states without ifs or buts
that "Nazi-like attacks against the
Jews" have resulted in more than six
Biron
million Murdered Jewish women, children and men.
And so we read Woltman's expose most carefully
The truth is that Woltman's entire series is one
huge pack of lies. His main charge is that the Soviet
government permits its press to attack Jews and that
the press discriminates against Jews by designating
Jewish artists and authors who have adopted Russian
names with their original Jewish names.'

WOLTMAN IS SO incensed at this "frontal at-
tack" against the Jews that he calls it worse than the

anti-Semitism under the Czar. Knowing Woltman's
"objectivity" as regards the Soviet Union we suspected
that the gentleman-friend of the American Jewish
Committee sounded a bit too passionate. So we in-
vestigated.
Since our Russian is more fluent than Woltman's,
we carefully studied the issue of "Pravda" which was
quoted in those American newspapers which raised
the cry of anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union.
Well in that "Pravda" issue a list of prize-winners
of the Stalin Award for the year 1948 is published.
And under the heading "Fiction Writers" several •
names of prizewinners are given.
Among these names we picked out "Boris Niko-
laevich Polyevol (Kampov); Elizabeth Yurevitch
Maltsev (Pupko): Anna Ottovna Saksa (Abzalon)."

THE NAMES in parenthesis are apparently not
Jewish. Thus one could easily gather from "Pravda"
that the formula of designating artists and writers by
their pen names and adding their original names in
parenthesis is not limited to Jews.
On the contrary it is and has been used for years
in order to give credit to national minorities for their
outstanding cultural contributions.
When a newspaper that calls itself reliable tries
to create a hysteria among American Jews by stating
very explicitly that the Soviet Union has gone Nazi

multiple wivery seemed to have

the matter were puzzled what
to do.

Finally, after a series of hud-

dles, conferences and pilpulistic

in its treatment of Jews there is something very foul
in the atmosphere.

Could it be that the American press with the
approval of one of our top "defense" agencies is trying
to use the Jewish issue in the war mongering cam-
paign now carried on in certain sections of our very
respectable press? It is high time to call halt.

"Don't play with Jewish interests in the arena of
reactionary politics." Stop before it is too late. . . .

JEWS IN THE privacy of their homes are known
to refer in a jocular mood to "Jewish anti-Semites."
But the remark is never taken quite seriously. No
Jew would want to hurt another Jew because the
other Jew is a Jew.

So, a.t least it struck us—until recently. But the
evidence ii in. There are Jewish anti-Semites.

A reliable survey by Louis Aronovitz of the "Jew-
ish Flordian" proves it beyond the shadow of a doubt.
It is a fact that•some of the hotels who advertise
"select Christian clientele" are Jewish-owned. It is a
fact that certain Jewish hotel owners who cater to
Jewish guests insist on employing Gentiles only.

One employment agency is quoted saying that
"Jews hardly able to speak English, call up and witlt-
out the slightest trace of embarrassment ask for
Gentile help ONLY."

LESSON FROM IRISH
.THE AMERICAN COUNCIL

for Judaism has asked the Amer-

the word Jew when describing
Israeli citizens.

Although it is doubtful the
Council can learn anything it
would be well for those gentle-

Irishman and a Jew.

Chief Rabbi Herzog of Israel
recently addressed the Ancient
Order of Hibernians in Elizabeth,
N. J. Dr. Herzog had been Chief
Rabbi of Ireland before settling in
Palestine and he is a master of
Gaelic.

On opening his address he re-
