Bill Stern
Laterals All-
Even Horses

By MITCHELL TENDLER
HAT WITH the pitter-patter
of little hoofbeats ensuing
from the Woodward•8 Mile vi-
cinity these days, this horSe story
involving Bill
Stern seems ap-
propriate f o r
further telling.
Stern, of
course, is known
as the "lateral
kid," For the
benefit of those
who don't hap-
e n to know
why he is called
Tendler
same, we shall
endeavor to elucidate.
During the process of broad-
casting football games, the Jewish
sportcaster frequently. had the
wrong man carrying the ball. In-
stead of acknowledging the error,
which, naturally, would put a
damper on his rapid-fire descrip-
tion, Stern would simply get the
ball in the proper hands by say-
ing that it was lateraled to the
party who had the ,pigskin in the
first place.

McCarthy Errs

WHICH BRINGS 'about the
horse story. Stern handled the
color commentary .for Cleni Mc-
Carthy in the running of the 1947
P•eakness,
It was in that race; you will
remember, that Cleni pulled the
classic faux pas of announcing the
winner as Jet Pilot instead of
Faultless.
In a matter of sedonds, realizing
his mistake, McCarthy came back
With, "I'm terribly'sorry, folks-"
and followed ivith ilong apology.

'LATER THAT EVENING Stern
was asked how he would have
handled proceedings had he made
the blunder McCarthy did.
"Lateral Willie" 'united and re-
plied, "Oh, I would have run the
race another 150 yards, and
straightened . the whole thing
out," •
All of which leads us to be-
lieve that next autumn's football
contests described by Stern
should prove very. entertaining,
