BULLETIN
By MITCHELL TENDLER
NO. 1 PITCHER on the staff of
a ball club in the Internation-
al League, just one jump from
the majors, after only two years
of organized ball, and a graduate
lawyer to boot, that is a thumb-
nail sketch of Aaron Silverman.
The bespectacled righthander
did a little hurl-
ing for George
Washington Uni-
versity in 1944
but started his
first real pitch-
. ing with the Bi-
i son's farm club,
Williamsport of
the Eastern Lea-
., gue, in 1946.
Tendler t he early
part of 1947 he was taken under
the wing of Paul Richards, the
Buffalo manager and former
Tiger catcher. Richards sent Sil-
verman back to Williamsport for
seasoning, but recalled him in
mid-season.

Chief Rabbi Isaac Ilalevi Ilerzog of Israel addressed a meeting of Detroit orthodox leaders Wed-
nesday on behalf of the Allied Jewish Campaign. Above he is shown speaking at the "Salute to
Israel" meeting of Bnai Brith UJA workers In New York. Left to right, Maurice Bisgyer, the
Chief Rabbi, Lawrence White and S. Arthur Cal xon.
Born in DP Camp
Used in Relief
FOR MOST of 1948, the pitching
lawyer was used mainly in re-
lief roles. Towards the end of the
year, however, under the con-
stant tutelage of the astute
Richards, he became the • most
effective hurler on the Bison
staff.
And so, in what is actually only
his third year in organized ball,
Silverman, who passed the Mary-
land bar examinations last June,
finds himself the top pitcher on a
team just a curve, drop and an
inshoot away from the major
leagues.

. A SIDELIGHT on the bench-
Ing of Cal Abrams the Brooklyn
rookie outfielder comes from Dan
Parker of the Daily Mirror.
Citing the booing of Abrams in
the April 25 game, Parker com-
mented, "It's tough enough for a
rookie to. be breaking into thq
majors in a strange city, but
when he has to pass through this
trying period with the hoots of
home-town fans ringing in his
ears, he can be pardoned for
wishing We had been born in
Kokomo, instead."

OVERHEARD IN Long Island:
A group of elderly Jewish wom-
en, most of them of the nouveau
riche type were sitting in Ben-
ny's Cocktail Bar having an after-
noon drink or two.
"Now, Mrs. Feitelbaum," one
lady inquired. "And how do you
like it here after moving up from
the East Side?"
"Fine, fine," the other lady re-
plied.
"We are so glad you like it
here," others joined in. "But,"
said the first lady, "it's so smoky
here shipsgoing by you know,
one has a hard time keeping
jewelry clean.
"Now take me, ladies," she
went on, "why, I have to change
my jewelry every day. One day
I wear my diamond lavaliere,
the one with the 82 diamonds.
The next day, that's dirty, so I
wear my emerald broocs, the one
that cost ;10,000. The third day
I wear by pearls. . . . And what
do you do about your jewels,
Mrs. Feitelbaum?" she asked.
"Me," replied Mrs. Feitelbaum,
"Iim, I don't have to worry about
washing my jewelry. Harry, that's
my husband, told me that when
my jewels get dirty I should just
throw them away."
