Teen-Age
Sophisticates
By HELEN TENNENBAUM
QUNDAY, DETROIT JEWS wi 1
0 celebrate the first anniversary
of the State of Israel. In the
past year, 200,000 newcomers ar-
rived in the new
State and 1,000
are still entering
daily. The infant
republic is build-
ing up its com-
munity projects,
its schools and
its hospitals to
make the State
a happier place
in which to live.
It is inspiring
Helen
to see the faith that both young
and old display in their new
country and how, however hum-
ble their homes, each has a real
feeling of belonging.
When we go out to the State
Fair Grounds Sunday afternoon,
we should give our sincere thanks
for the recreation of the ancient
Homeland. Let us pray that, as
Americans, we may find inspira-
tion from our brethren in Israel
and double our support of the
fledgeling democratic republic of
Israel.

Your reporters had an oppor-
tunity to acquaint themselves
with the activities of Ben-Zion
Ilan, scheduled principal speaker.
He was born in New York, where
he actively participated in Jewish
youth group affairs.
During the war years Ilan saw
service in the Jewish Brigade and
following the war became a mem-
ber of Haganah. • He primarily
concerned himself with the plight
of the "illegal immigrants." We
learned that Ilan, now a mem-
ber of the Israeli Embassy in
America, wed a Detroit girl. They
have three children.
