LAKE SUCCESS—Unless some
inforseen barrier turns up, Israel
will become a full-fledged mein-
ber of the United Nations today
or Friday.
This was indicated when the
special political committee of the
world assembly approved the ap-
plication of the Jewish State by
a vote of 33 to 11 with 13 absten-
tions. The committee has a
member from every nation in the
UN.

Swo-thirds majority needed when
the General Assembly takes a

strong supporters alone voted
against admission. The latter in-
eluded Afghanistan, Burma, In-
dia, Iran and Pakistan.

stained, both on the argiiinent
that Israel had not given proper
assurances on the problem of the
Arab refugees and on the plan to
internationalize Jerusalem. The

Weizmann, shown above cutting a birthday cake with Mrs.

by the United Jewish Appeal. "The future of everything that
we have built up in Israel depends in very considerable measure
on the Appeal," declared Dr. Weizmann.
