Israel Swept
by Rejoicing

(Continued from Page 2)
voiced the nation's "joyous
thanks" and expressed Israel's
gratitude to the U. S. and Russia
for their support. He struck a
sober note by warning that cares
and difficulties are far from over
for the infant republic and that
unity and vigilance were needed
to overcome them.
Only last Sunday, Israeli army
forces engaged in an hour battle
with what were described as
Arab irregulars and wrested from
them a section of the Tel Aviv-
Jerusalem railway allotted to
Israel in the armistice with
Transjordan.
On Tuesday, Egypt withdrew
all its troops from the Bethlehem
and Hebron areas to fulfill their
armistice agreement. Viscount
Samuel, Palestine's first high
commissioner. joined Jews and
Arabs in celebrating their de-
parture.
At Lake Success, Arab and
other Moslem states, fearing Is-
rael's imminent entry in the UN,
punched a drive in the special
political committee of the As-
sembly to prevent Israel's admis-
sion.
Pakistan and Iraq challenged
the Security Council decision on
March 4 approving Israel as a
peaceful State and Lebanon urged
&lay until Israel accepts in prin-
ciple the internationalization of
Jerusalem.
Argentina added a fly to the
ointment by pressing for a state-
ment from Israel on attempts to
punish the slayers of Count Ber-
nadotte.

Palestinian Goes
in Derby Saturday

CHURCHILL DOWNS, KY.
-(Special to the Chpnicle)-If
you are a hunch bettor, Satur-
day's Derby here is a natural.
With celebrations observing the
first anniversary of the State of
Israel going at fullblast through-
out the nation, Isidore Bieber's
handsome colt, Palestinian, is all
set for the famous "Run for the
Roses." Hirsch Jacobs thought
enough of Palestinian's chances
in the mile and a quarter classic
to have him shipped here over
Bieber's objections.
Israel-Bieber-Jacobs-Palestinian
do you have to get hit with a
lead pipe, maybe?
