Hebrew Union College
Marks 74th Birthday

The 74th year since the estab-
lishment of the Hebrew Union
College—the oldest Jewish sem-
inary in the United States was
celebrated March 26, Founder's
Day, at the Hebrew Union Col-
lege—Jewish Institute of Relig- ,
ion in Cincinnati.

founded in March, 1875, by Dr.
Isaac Mayer Wise, an immigrant
Rabbi from Bohemia. lie came to
the United States in 1896 to es-
cape the repressive atmosphere
of Hapsburg Europe, convinced
that the salvation of Jewry lay in
free America. He believed pas-
sionately in the right of men and
women to live their own spiritual
lives.
