Jerusalem. One of the commis-
sions is to consist of seven mem-
bers with a UN official at its head.
Another is to deal specifically
with problems affecting Jerusa-
lem.
Meanwhile some difficulties
have developed with Egypt over
the latter's refusal to let Israel-
bound cargoes pass through the
Suez Canal.
In a new budgetary report,
Finance Minister Eliezer Kaplan
pointed out the average per capita
tax was close to 27 pounds, based
on an estimated national income of
between 140,000,000 to 150,000,000
pounds.
He said the burden of the war
costs must be met by the govern-
ment without any outside assist-
ance. Kaplan also stressed that
action was necessary to control
inflation and the high cost of
living.
Pending study of the proposed
budget by its finance committee,
Knesset approved the budget for
a period of one month. Kap-
lan was reported to have submit-
ted a $20,000,000 budget.

THE DAYS of forced mill-

a

had from the Jewish Pale had a
hard time of it. He didn't have
much learning, especially, in the
finer things as punctuation.
The food was not Kosher and
bad to boot, every officer took
pleasure in beating him and
things looked bad indeed.
To cheer him up his parents
began sending food and for the
holidays even arranged to get
him a half dozen geese. A few
days later they received a let-
ter:
''Dear Papa and Mama," he
wrote, "The geese that you have
sent me have all died. Only one's
left, your son Moshe."

ON A NEW YORK LOCAL!
The train was late and the su-
burbanite commuters had visions
of their wives angrily waiting at
the stations. A passenger leaned
over to his neighbor: "What time
is it, please?" he inquired. The
other man raised is hand to see
the watch and th n dropped it
quickly.
"No, you don't! No, you don't!"
he shouted in reply. "I won't tell
you the time. Suppose I tell you
'it's a quarter past six.' Where
are you getting off?' At Mamaro-
neck.' I'll reply. 'Mamaroneck,'
you'll exclaim, "That's where I
live!' N000 . . I'll say, 'and
what street, if you don't mind
telling me?' 'Ishmish Street,'
you'll say. 'How strange,' I'll re-
ply, 'I live next street down on
Smith avenue!' No,' you'll say in
surprise, 'how nice.' Now that
we're neighbors, why don't you
drop in to tea.' 0.K.' I'll say.
The next thing you know you are
at my house, drinking my tea
and making eyes at my Becky.
If you want to know the time
please ask someone else!"

Woman In Army Gets
First Israeli License

TEL AVIV - (World New s
Services)-The first license to
practice law in Israel was given
to a woman in uniform, Flight
Lt. Tamar Werber of the Israeli
air force, daughter of the chair-
man of the Israel Bar Associa-
tion.
Her husband, Major Yehuda
Werber, was also among seven
advocates to be admitted to the

bar.

ber, challenged the right of the
government to bar entry of Jews
to the country for any reason
whatsoever.
The issue was raised over the
refusal of the government to per.
mit the entry of Sidney Stanley,
a Polish Jew facing deportation
from Britain, where he has been
living for many years, on charges
of involvement in alleged gov-
ernment financial irregularities.
Decision on the issue was
avoided when Knesset voted to
consider- another point on its
agenda.
Knesset voted to bar Commun-
ist members from security and
foreign affairs committees. , The
Communist deputies demanded
such representation so that, they
claimed, they might be in a posi-
tion to "see that Israel's policy
will not adapt itself to the in-
famous policy of western Europe."

Church Won't Remove
Plaque Libeling Jews

VIENNA-(WNS)-A petition
by the Jewish community of Linz,
Austria, seeking the removal of
a blood libel plaque decorating
one of the churches of that city
was turned down by the munici-
pal authorities.
The plaque, which has been
hanging in the church since 1902,
carries the inscription "In mem-
ory of the Christian child Urala
Beck who was murdered by the
Jews of Linz in 1443."
The municipal authorities re-
jected the removal petition on the
ground of lack of jurisdiction
since the church's property is
sacred.
