ceived the Critics Award last season.
Today, with Eugene O'Neill out of the running and
since Clifford Octets seems to have lost his creative
touch in Hollywood. Miller is rightly considered
. America's outstanding contemporary dramatist.
Tall with a Lincolnesque face lie represents per-
haps more than any other intellectual the creativeness
of the American Jew, thoroughly Jewish and
thoroughly American.

M

WE ADD our congratulations la the editors
m of the Anglo-Jewish press on the occasion of the
recent celebration of its hundredth anniverary. The
Anglo-Jewish press is often maligned.
Its influence is frequently minimized.
But the Jewish community of America
knows how badly - its communal life ''.
would be handicapped if there were
no Anglo-Jewish press. And so since
the first hundred years are the hard- ::'
est, we predict an era of great pros- .'-:
perity and affluence for the Anglo- '
Jewish press in the second hundred
years. The pioneers who labored
selflessly to build this press will not
be forgotten.

ARTHUR MILLER, the playwright who authored
"Death of A Salesman," the drama which dominates
Bniad•ay this season comes from a religious Jewish
family.

THIS BEING the official brotherhood period, we
were rather dismayed to read in the Boston "Pilot,"
the official organ of the archdiocese of Boston, a
violent attack against Israel.
The archbishop of Boston is none other than Richard
J. Cushing, a man whom the Jews of Boston praise as
their great friend and whom they honored on several
,cs.„--__.
occasions.

Well, "The Pilot" in.its issue of Feb. 26, features
on its front page an article by Brothel Anthony Bruya,
OFM, under the heading of "Israel Action Reduces
Arab Refugees to Needy Beggars."
"The Pilot" never shed any tears about the 6.000.000
Jewish victims of Hitler's pogroms but these poor
Arabs arouse the editors of "The Pilot" to weep
bitterly.

woke him up.
About four years ago he wrote the novel "Focus"
which dealt with the theme of anti-Semitism in
America. He is progressive and intensely anti-war,
although not a pacifist. His play "All My Sons" was
a dynamic indictment of war profiteering and re-

Britain Snarls Talks
With King Abdullah

By NATHAN ZIPRIN
THE ISRAELI-TRANSJORDAN
negotiations are not proceed-
ing as smoothly as expected. The
reason is simple, Britain's foreign
and colonial offices are directing
Abdullah's tactics,
Abdullah covets most if not all
of Arab Palestine, He knows he
will not get it But he is a hard
bargainyr as long as he has Bev-
in's diplomatic and financial
backing.
Informed sources believe Ab-
dullah would lose out if a plebis-
cite were held in the Arab Pales-
tine area. To gain his ends, Ab-
dullah may offer Israel a treaty
during the negotiations.
Israel was sounded out recently
by the Greek government on the
question of joining the proposed
Eastern-Mediterranean bloc. The
move shows the fine London-
Washington diplomatic hand.
How Israel will crack that dilem-
ma is pure conjecture.

SHUN ALIGNMENT
THE MAPAI PARTY is deter-
mined to steer clear of the east-
ern-western muddle. Should Ma-
pam refuse .to enter the cabinet
the issue yvill have been joined.
Though Ben Gurion believes Ma-
pam will accept its allotted port-
folios in the cabinet, the chances
against are better than ever.
Concentration on economic af-
fairs will be the next phase in
Israel's short history. The vast
flow of immigrants, absorption of
huge numbers into the country's
economy and the transition from
a war to a peace time economy
are holding the attention of Is-
rael's best brains.
To ease the strain will require
private investments from abroad
and the flow of money from fund-
raising organizations throughout
the world, particularly in the
United States and South Amer-
ica. Israel has stood the test in
conquering its military and di-
plomatic problems. It will meet
th; new challenge with equal
success.

DENIAL BY TABAK
RABBI
ISRAEL TABAK,

president of the Rabbinical Coun-
cil of America, writes us he was
quite disturbed about an item in
this column concerning an alleged
statement he made at Louisville
about "Israel and a third Bible."
We couldn't believe an orthodox
Rabbi saying such a thing but we
relied on a report which appear-
ed in the Courier Journal of
Louisville.
We are delighted to print in
this column Dr. Tabak's denial.
The quotation concerning a third
Bible, he informs us, "was the .
interpretation of the reporter,
but I never made this silly state-
ment—I gave him a prepared
statement which he did not use ,
instead he wrote his own story."
Now that the record is straight.'
this columnist offers his sincere I
apologies to Rabbi Tabak .
The life of a columnist is not an
easy one.

IT CANNOT BE denied by even the most optimistic
experts that anti-Semitism has been on the increase
fur the last 12 months. Yet somehow, if one surveys
the Jewish panorama in this country, one gains the
impression that everything is best in the best of the
world.

The hush-hush policy of our defense organizations
has triumphed. . Even the American Jewish Congress
prefers to work quietly.

The leaders and the rank and file of the anti-Jewish
groups go on building without any public interference.
It would seem
s g high time that our defense
organiaations cease usin the saecharine form of
peasement and let their voices ring out against the
the
revived KKK and the too numerous veteran and
mother organizations who are doing a nationwide job
spreading the Hitler gospel.
St op whitewashing our Protestant and Catholic
clergies who with but few exceptions are nodding
assent to anti-Semitic propaganda.
