KEPT ALIVE IN SCROLL
X THE STORY OF Ptirim has
been preserved for us in the Book
of Esther. The story deals with an
episode in the life of the Jews
who lived in Persia during the
reign of Ahasuerus known to
history as Xerxes.
The story is typical in its main
outlines of the long chain of per-
secutions to which the Jews in
the dispersion have always been
subjected.
Mordecai, an assimilated rich
Jew, rises in power and influ-
ence with the royal court; his
niece, the beautiful Esther, is
taken into the harem and be-
comes the king's favorite.
Haman. the new minister be-
cause of a grudge against Mor-
decai the Jew, vents his spleen
on the Jewish people as a whole,
He presents them to the king as
a dangerous people, "scattered
and dispersed throughout the
empire, different in their laws
from all other people, and re-
fusing to obey the King's laws."

cast, and the day of execution is
set for the thirteenth of Adar.
The Jews of Susa fast and
pray; Mordecai conveys the in-
formation to Queen Esther,
whose Jewish antecedents re-
mained unknown at court. She
invites the king and his minister
to a feast, and then pleads with
the king for the life of her peo-
ple.
A new act is promulgated by
the king, giving the Jews the
right to organize themselves for
self-defense. Thus the calamity
is averted. In commemoration of
the event the festival of Purim is
instituted.
The story in full as told in the
Book of Esther is a most fascin-
ating Oriental tale and reads like
one from the Arabian Nights.
Some historians and Bible
students are of the opinion that
the actual events of the story
could not have happened in the
days of King Ahasuerus. They
doubt the historical authenticity
of the principle characters of
Mordecai and Esther, for their
names closely r e se m b l e the
names of Babylonian Gods, Mor-
duk and Istar. The Book of Es-
ther according to them is not a
book of history, but an historical
novel that relates a lengthy tale
on ancient Jews.

with joy and even frivolity. In
the Diaspora celebrations in-

the reading of the Megillah,

the origin of the Jewish theatre.

Slates Ovsher
Moishe Oysher, world-famous
cantor, stage and film star, will
highlight the program of the
Northwest Hebrew Congregation
dedication dinner, Sunday eve-
ning, March 20. Oysher will pre-
sent a varied selection of cantoral
melodies and Yiddish and Eng-
lish monologues.
The dinner will be staged by
the Synagogue in celebration of
the completion of the school sec-
tion of the structure. The class-
