BBYO CHATTER

WHETHER CENTRAL HIGH'S
basketball squad is still in
the playoffs or not, as this comes
out, it still remains that any-
thing can happen. Miller is
supposed to be a cinch this
time. Tell that
to the South-
western o u tfit
of 1942. The
1942 city basket-
ball playoffs
saw Cass Tech
and Hamtramck
from the east
side, and Cen-
tral and South-
western f r o m
the west side
Tender
vieing for top
honors. Just as the east side,
with Northern and Miller, seems
to be the power now, that's how
the west side was top dog then.

Romp, Expected

THE PROSPECTORS had
hung Central on the wall dur-
ing the regular season and were
expected to romp through the
playoffs.
Then it happened. The boys
from Delay missed every con-
ceivable shot in the book. They
- must have stayed awake the
night before, dreaming up ways
to blow dogs, miss set shots,
hit the rim on pivots and bloop
it over the blackboard on long
ones. It was a pathetic exhibi-
tion from a top-heavy favorite
and Hamtramck stumbled in,
27,25.

• •

Like Champs

CENTRAL, MEANWHILE,
with Harlan Hidgins, Bob Mer-
rill, Jerry Katz, Johnny Jans and
Capt. "Little Joe" Bale, played
good steady ball. They refused
to get rattled on the Olympia
court and retained such perfect
poise that you'd think they were
the champs. And they were soon
to be just that.
•
•
•

Beat Cass

THE FIRST NIGHT of the
playoffs, following the South-
western-Hamtramck fiasco, the
Blazers took charge of Cass from
the opening whistle and won, 36-
28. The best was •et to come,
however. Central noticed that
a g a ins t Southwestern, Ham-
tramck had consistantly utilized
a long pass downcourt whenever
they took the ball out.

• .
Take Cosmos Easily

•

SOUTHWESTERN was unable
to change their style of play to
cope with it. Not so Cential.
Whenever Hamtramck took the
ball out, Jans faded back, and
sure enough, the Cosmos threw
him strikes all evening long.
It wasn't even close that final
game. The tipoff was the tipoff.
Hudgins got the draw, tipped it
downcourt to Merrill, who broke
away, made the dog, and that
was that. The final score was
Central 39, Hamtramck 24.
And that's the way it goes. Go
to Miller and tell Coach Witt
Robinson that his boys have got
a lockup, and rest assured, he
will politely show you the door.
That's what makes sport in-
teresting. Why, one day even the
Calumet Comet Citation will fol-
low somebody across the wire.
It must happen.
