Weizmann Dinner Delay Linkedto State Dept.

By PHINEAS J. BIRON
HE WEIZMANN DINNER was postponed at the re-
quest of the American State Department. Top of-
ficials persuaded Mr. Truman that Arab-Jewish negoti-
tions would be jeopardized if Mr. Truman and Dr.
Weizmann exhibited their friend-
ship publicly at this time.
The same State Department poli-
cy is also responsible for the in-
structions to the American ambas-
sador to Israel to keep away from
the inauguration of the Constituent
Assembly in Jerusalem. It was felt
that Jewish claims to Jerusalem
would have been strengthened by
official American presence on that
occasion.

P. J. Biron
WEIZMANN'S "TRIAL AND ERROR" is creating a
bad impression in Israel.
His minimizing of the creative Zionist work by
Herzl, Nordeau Jabotinsky, Brandeis, Ben Gurion, Ben
Zwi and other giants of the days that marked the be-
ginning of political and practical work for a Jewish
State, is being sharply criticized. That is why Weiz-
mann in his inaugural address at the Constituent As-
sembly went out of his way to mention several of
these leaders.

T

And while we do not agree with Rabbi Silver on
many issues we do think that he deserved more than
a passing mention in Weizmann's autobiography.

NOW LET US be reasonable, Rabbi Goldstein. We
read the other day a statement you issued in Jerusa-
lem, in which you are reported as having said that
"the immigration to Israel of a million and a half Jew-
ish refugees from Europe and Arab countries in the
next five years was envisaged."

prosecuting advocates of physical violence against
Jews and for interfering with the distribution of anti-
Jewish literature.
We have information from reliable sources that the
Mosley gangs in England are not only extremely ac-
tive but are organizing units whose task it is to in-
timidate the Jewish population in London and other
large centers.
Jews are being physically attacked, store windows
are being smashed, children are being molested. These
are undeniable facts, yet the police, have strict orders
not to interfere.
Wonder why our American defense organizations
are not paying attention to this rise of British Hit-
lerism. .

WALTER WINCIIELL revealed the other day that
the attempt to afflict Americans with NaLi musicians
is part of a deliberate plan.
Newsweek stated that this plan is being sponsored
by our State Department "to restore German-American
cultural relations."
Walter's comment is rather to the point. Says Wal-
ter: "How do you like that? Could anything be more
bitterly ironic? . .. Using Nazis as cultural agents.
The Nazis who burned books, murdered and put be•
hind bars great authors, artists and musicians."

Now seriously, where did you get that figure? There
are no more than 150,000 refugees left in concentra-
tion camps in Europe. Eastern European countries can
at best, provide another 50,000. Arab countries will
give, maximum, 300,000. This makes a total of a half
a million.
So, we ask you, Dr. Israel Gohlstein where did you
get the figure of 1,500,000, unless you expect one mil-
lion refugees from America.
We allow a certain margin for exaggeration to stim-
ulate fund raising in countries outside of Israel but
there should be a ceiling to extravagant statements by
responsible Zionist leaders.

BEN GURION'S PURSUITS
ISRAELI PREMIER David
Ben Gurion is not only a mili-
tary strategist and statesman but
also a great lover of books. He
has one of the largest private
Buddhistic libraries. Zionists from
all over the world send him their
rare finds. His other intellectual
interests are the Greek classics
and Jewish mysticism.
In 1959 it is estimated Israel
will have a population of more
than two million Jews. To meet
the problem of the enlarged pop-
ulation, the new State will have
to increase its agricultural pro-
duction by more than 70 percent.
This means a large part of the
population will have to engage
in farming. One of the great
sources of income in the next
decade will be tourist trade.
