RISDON 18977 Wyoming, West 7 Mlle Knesseth Israel BY NATHAN ZIPRIN Sitting in an office somewhere in the United States and trying to capture the mood in Jeru- salem at the historic moment when the Israeli Parliament, Knesseth Israel, held its first session, is a task sufficient to challenge the literary master. Perhaps it would be better if we tried to convey the significance of the event through relating what happened in the Holy City, since the distant participant in the festivity can by no stretch of the imagination project him- self into the event as fully as he wishes or prays for. What was the mood in Israel and in Jerusalem when the new chapter in Jewish histoy was begun with the opening of Israel's first Parliament on the fifteenth day of the month of Shevat, trditional Jewish Arbor Day? tonic event that was to take place laer. The atmosphere in the Holy City was one of jubilation, but also of reverence. Bearded men and head-covered women mur- mured blessings for the men entrusted with guiding Israel's, destiny, and prayers for the dead whose eyes were closed forever. Fom the lips of men, women and children, prayers went up to the Almighty for having granted them the privilege of witnessing one of the greatest events in Jewish history. Young children who could not intellectually grasp what was happening sensed they were in the midst of an awe-inspiring event. POPULACE EXULTS The populace rejoiced, but it was the joy not only of people who had seen the achievement of a miracle but of a people who carried the conviction in the depths of their hearts that their acomplishment will grow and blossom into . that objective which only the dreamers and prophets once believed possible. There was a spirit of peace and and reverence over the Holy City and of joy and glad- ness and of security and hope. It was a people with raised head on that day, heads not raised in vainglory npr in boast- ing over victory and achieve- ment alone, but raised in pray- er to Mtn above in whose trust Israel throughout the ages has placed its fate and destiny and future. Adding to the festivity and significance of the event was the fact that the opening of Parliament coincided with Chamisha Asar B'Shvat, New Year for the Trees, a day which tells the story of the coming of Spring, of freshness, of growth ttnd of fruitfulness, REDEMPTION AT LAST We can look for the answer to Dr. Weizmann's address, parti- cularly that portion in which he gave thanks in prayer to the God of Israel for having granted him the privilege of "witnessing the redemption of our people after centuries of affliction and suffering". We might find it in other con- secrated an divinely-inspired phrases of one of the greatest Oa ,09 Surely the veteran Zionist lead- er who was spared by Provi- dence from the fate of Moses spoke our minds and echoed our feelings and sentiments when he so eloquently and deeply spoke of the Jewish past and of the Jev,:isb future. His inspiring message, how- ever, would not have been pos- sible if he did not drink inspira- tion and intuition from that eternal fount which is the peo- ple.
