Campus Club
Revival Brings
BackMemories
N

By MITCHELL TENDLER
THAT the Campus
11 Club has been reactivated on
the Wayne campus brings back
memories of
that lusli pe-
riod of sport at
the school
when names
like Tolinich,
.Bayer, Katz,
• Berris, Tigay,
Paysner,
Schlesi n g e r,
Gurman, Blu-
menfeld,
Schwartz,
Tendler
Hoffman, et al., made the Grim
and Gold a color combination to
be respected.
Of the Jewish athletes who
composed the Campus Club in
the golden era of 1936-39, 12
were varsity lettermen and fiye
were captains of varsity teams.
That was a pretty fair record
when you stop to consider that
the membership of the club aver-
aged 15 men.

IN '36, CARL BAYER cap-
tained the basketball squad, and,
along with Henry Berris, Len
Tigay and Hy Paysner composed
four fifths of the team that
walked off the floor on the top
end of the score in 19 out of
22 contests against major compe-
tition.
According to Coach Newmie
Ertell, it was the greatest team
he ever coached, altd I'm sure
y'all know that Ertell was around
for a long, long time.

REPRESENTING THE Campus
Club in tennis through those
years were Jack Schlesinger,
Max Gurman and Iry Blumen-
feld. Schlesinger took the city
singles title in '39 to cap a phe-
nomenal season for the Wayne
netmen who took 24 consecutive
matches without a single loss
against competition including the
Big Ten and a Southern tour!
Coach Norman Wann still
speaks in awe of Schlesinger,
who, he remarked, was the type
of player who would sacrifice the
first set, if necessary, to get a
line on his opponent, and then
proceed to blast him off the
courts. Talk about confidence!

Sam Schwartz was the fifth of
the Campus Club captains on the
Wayne campus during that time.
He led the cross-country *team
in '36 and ran the mile on the
regular track team.
This is a brief glimpse of the
heritage of the Campus Club.
Next week we'll try to get the

threat to democratic security and

it.
