New Head of Ai Committee Is Oil Executive

BY PIIINEAS J. BIRON
WE'RE TOLD that among the reasons that in-
" fluenced Judge Proskauer to resign from the
presidency of the American Jewish Committee is the
"unfortunate" publicity given to
his associations with the Arabian-
American Oil Company.
If this is really so, we congratu-
late ourselves for having done our
share in training the spotlight on
the Proskauer oil link. As a mat-
ter of fact we were the only one
who refused to swallow quietly the
venerable Jewish leader's oil drops.
•
•
BUT WE HAVE not succeeded
P. J. Biron in cleansing the Committee of all
its oil stains. The new president, Jacob Blaustein; is
one of America's big oil men. As a matter of fact•lie
is drenched in oil, but thus far we have not dis-
covered any Arabian connections. Jacob's father,
Louis Blaustein, built in 1935 the world's largest
petroleum refinery unit in Texas City.

Jacob's oil connections include the presidency of
the American Oil Co. which merged with the Pan
American Petroleum and Transport Co. He is also
the president of the Mexican Petroleum Corp. and
heads the huge enterprise called Lord Baltimore Fill-
ing Stations.

THE AMERICAN Jewish Committee at its recent
conference made a very important discovery. In a
solemn statement, the result of sweat and sweat, the
big businessmen of the committee proclaimed that
"citizens of the United States are Americans, and
citizens of Israel are Israelis."'
And then to convince us that they really meant
what they said and that they were ready to bear full
responsibility for this revolutionary idea, they added:
'This, we affirm with all its implications; and just as
our own government speaks only for its citizens, SO
Israel speaks only for its citizens."
Well, we are startled, gentlemen of the Jewish
Committee. But, seriously, we did net know that
there was doubt in anybodys mind that citizens of
the United States are Americans.

Off the Record:

THE FESTIVAL of Chanukah is no longer observed
by Jews alone. It is kept in sonic churches, too.
This year, for example, Chanukah was observed
by Christians in several communities. It is annually
and publicly celebrated by the Flatbush (Brooklyn)
Unitarian Church. The Unitarian Church in Indianap-
olis, Ind. held a joint Christmas-Chanukah celebra-
tion on Dec. 26, and on the same day a Chanukah
sermon was preached in the Unitarian Church of
Northampton, Mass.
In no small degree, "My Glorious Brothers" by How-
ard Fast is making Chanukah better known and un-
derstood by Christians as well as Jews.
Incidentally Howard Fast was awarded the $500
prize by the Jewish Book Council of America for the
best fiction Jewish work of the year. We salute the
Jewish Welfare Board for this non-partisan gesture.

PEOPLE WONDER why the name of Arthur Hays
Sulzberger, publisher of the New York Times, has
disappeared from the roster of directors of the Jewish
Theological Seminary. It would be interesting to know
why he resigned from the seminary's board and the
reasons why his resignation was not made public.
