Israel Thwarts British Tank Plot in

B PHINEA J . ON
THE NEWSPAPERS omitted an important aspect of
the recent fighting in the Negev. The Egyptian army
had been equipped with new tanks by the British and
British officers had worked out a
plan to defeat the Israeli on the bat-
tlefield. It was only after the Jewish
army had smashed the Egyptians
and captured a half a dozen of the
new tanks that British diplomacy
got busy and insisted on an immed-
iate truce and withdrawal of the Is-
raeli from the Negev. In other words
Bevin was handed the coup de grace
during the last week of December
and now is determined to halt the
P. J. Biron Jewish army via the Security Coun-
cil. The U. S. could stop Britain but is. influenced by
political considerations which have no direct bearing

on Israel. And so the U. S. permits Bevin to get away
with his scheme by default.

THE AMERICAN SPORT world will soon welcome
Van Dam, the Dutch middleweight boxer. Van Dam is
tall for a middleweight and very good looking.
Here is the story that makes him a real champ, as
far as we are concerned. Next door to the Van Dams, in
a small Dutch town lived a Jewish family. When the
Nazis invaded Holland, Van Darn, the fighter hid them
in the cellar of his home. One night a Gestapo man in-
sisted on searching the Van Dam home. Our hero gave
him so thorough a beating that the Gestapo never again
knocked at the Van Dam door.
Luc, that's the first name of our champion, married
the daughter of the Jewish family and now they have
three children. Mrs. Van Dam 'is her husband's manager
and also his fight promoter. And the combination works
fine.

ODDS AND ENDS—Ira Wolfert's new novel "Act of
Love" deals with a Jewish soldier in the American
army during the war. Wolfert's hero in the end rejects
the Jewish religion in favor of Christianity.
The trouble with Wolfert's novel is that the author,
who is himself a Jew, doesn't know beans about the
Jewish religion. If he had, his climax would have been
another story.
The newspapers outside of California ignored the
death of I. George Dobsevage, one time secretary of
the Jewish Publication Association of America. He was
one of the builders of that valuable institution.
Sholem Asch tried to join the Ilistadrut in America
but the efforts of Chaim Greenberg, editor of the
Kaempfer, • to whitewash him failed completely and
merely precipitated a new violent controversy in the
Yiddish press.
