medical authorities as not being of military age or as being unfit
for military service and now ---
they have to be examined by the soldiers who drag him away.

to explain that he has been ill,
and after all, this is the seventh
camp he has been in. No, he too,
must go back. The number of
those in the lorry bound camp-
wards increases.
A youngish man walks past.
His expression is desperate.
Along his arm there is a deep
bloody gash.
"He always comes back,"

murmurs a British officer. "We
have to check him up with
every load."

Suddenly there is wild agita-
tion: "Where's my luggage" asks,
a man on the lorry?
"And mine, and mine," echo
the others.
It has already been loaded up
on the ship. .. "Sorry, old boy,"
says the officer, "there's really
nothing we can do about it."
At last the ship leaves the
harbor; hundreds of heads are
craned over the deck railings.
The refugees strain their eyes
to catch a glimpse of their com-
rades at the Carulos camp,
which forms part of the distant
landscape.
At last they can clearly see
figures moving. There is a loud
yell as they shout good-bye to
those that are left behind.
