JEWISH CHRONICLE

Bnai Brith Highlights

NEW YORK—While the Ger-
mans still resist democracy,
Jews in Israel are building a
democratic State, even under
wartime conditions, according
to Maurice Bisgyer, national sec-
retary of Bnai Brith, in a series
of articles published by the
New York Daily Mirror.
Bisgyer recently returned
from a trip to Europe and
Israel. In Israel, according to
Bisgyer's articles, "c hildr en

portance, cows second, and pa-
rents last . . . Yet they carry
on — and not for themselves
alone. Every , newcomer is wel-
come. Refugees, arriving at the
rate of 10,000 a month, mean

arms.

the outlying settlements, the
people are carrying on normal
pursuits, working in field and
factory, but like our American
colonists, their guns ready at
their side. They pray for Sho-

hope to be attained by force of
arms.
"Although great effort has
been made to teach the democ-

ratic concept to Germans," he
wrote, "the lessons has not been
learned except in Berlin. I in-
quired what was happening to
the democratic concept for
which the war was fought.
One German youth leader, at
a conference with the American
group, arrogantly demanded:
"What does democracy do for
us that we don't have already?"
Bisgyer retorted: "Although
the individual benefits from
democracy, the citizen owes a
responsibility to it. He not only
receives but gives." To this re-
mark, Bisgyer reported, the re-
action was "complete silence."
