Who Is to Blame for Israel Appeasement?

By PIIINEAS J. BIRON
T SHOULD -BE obvious to even the most naive ob-
servers that the so-called Conciliation Commission
for Palestine is merely a British device to prolong the
- truceand give Abdullah time to
establish himself in the Arab por-
tion of Palestine.
In the meanwhile, to keep Amer-
ican Zionists happy, the White
House is circulating official rumors
that Mr. Truman will grant de jure
recognition to Israel sometime in
January. It is the old, effective
double game, Bartley Crum des-
cribed in his book, "Behind the
Silken Curtain."
P. J. Siren
It still works. But the big ques-
tion we would like to have answered is this: Are Am-
erican Zionists playing along with Mr. Truman _on Urei c`
own "political wisdom" or are they under orders from

the Israeli government? This should be made clear.
It is possible that Emanuel Neumann has strict orders
from Tel Aviv to keep quiet. If this is so, he should
speak out and place the responsibility where it belongs.

INSIDERS HAVE intimated for some time that Pres-
ident Weizmann believes that only he personally knows
how to handle Truman and consequently the govern-
ment of Israel might have requested the ZOA leader-
ship to keep its hands off the White House.
If this is really so, then the rank and file should be
informed. Lest we forget, Weizmann made a mess of
his personal handling of Churchill, succeeding only
whenever Churchill was in the opposition, powerless to
implement his promises.
Who is responsible for the American appeasement
policy, Tel Aviv or New York?

Bevin Private War on Israel
Disgusts Laborite Leaders

By NATHAN ZIPRIN
ISRAEL'S UN membership ap-
plication has been turned
down by the Security Council.
Israel is perhaps better off by
staying out of the UN. It should
proclaim its neutral status and
keep out of international power
politics.
No matter how Israel will vote
in the UN it will create unnec-
essary and embarrassing compli-
cations for itself and for mil-
lions of Jews outside Israel. . . .
Vindictive Bevin is determined
to intensify his cold war against
Israel during the period of the
General Assembly's recess.
Against the advice of leading
Laborites in Britain he plans
sending personal emissaries to a
number of countries in his diplo-
matic war against the new State.
He and he alone stands in the
way of British recognition of Is-
rael.

AT A SECRET meeting of
government officials following
Churchill's blast against Britain's
Palestine policy Bevin used such
profane language that one of his
own party members threatened
to expose him if he did not con-
trol himself. His profanity was
directed against Jews and Is-
rael.
Both Attlee and Morrison are
disgusted with the venom he has
been displaying toward the Jew-
ish State. It is feared at 10

is a marked revival of religious feeling among mem-
bers of the Hebrew faith in Poland"
The Polish Rabbi based his conclusion on increasing
mass attendance at religious services. Also the re-
quests for circumcision of infants and enrollment for
pre-Bar Mitzvah instruction are growing. Kosher meat
is in greater demand.
In other words Polish Jewry is still very religious.
This statement seems to tally with other reliable sta-
tistics such as: There are a present 20 day schools of
the Talmud Torah type and 30 schools with classes in
the afternoon hours. The total enrollment amounts to
1500.
