Mt. Clemens Sees
Success in Drive

See. Marshall Flouts
Truman on Pallyrstine

By NATHAN ZIPRIN

STRONG PRESSURE continues
to be exercised on Truman to
fall in line with the Bevin-Mar-
shall policy on Palestine. The
new argument is that UN author-
ity must be upheld and strength-
ened at all costs.
The same gentlemen were less
UN minded when the Arab
states invaded Palestine in de-
fiance of the UN. International
authority is obviously a one way
street.
Marshall is acting in Paris
as if he and not Truman were
elected President. He is defying
and d'sobeying Mr. Truman's
pre-and-after-election directives
on the Palestine issue. Next to
Bevin he is the only man who
is keeping the Bernadotte plan
alive. And he has the able as-
sistance of Bunche who, for
some mysterious reason, toes the
British line as if it were a faith.

FORRESTAL BACKING
TO BOLSTER his support of
the Bernadotte plan Marshall
has called on his friend and
buddy Mr. Forrestal. And that
gentleman immediately accom-
modated him by coming to Paris
and telling the U. S. delegation
that support of the Bernadotte
plan was essential to the main-
tenance of friendly relations
with the Arab states.
What he meant to say was
of course that adoption of the
plan was essential to British oc-
cupation of the Negev. Thus we
have the spectacle of two Ameri-
cans who are rumored out of the
next cabinet dictating a policy
which is opposed by the Presi-
dent of the U. S. Those gentle-
men are planning to railroad
their designs before they are re-
tired.
The trend according to all in-
dications is toward direct Israeli-
Arab talks. Marshall's vigorous
behind-the-scene pushing of the
Bernadotte scheme must lead to
renewal of warfare.,
Is it Marshall's purpose to ne-
gate the basic objective of the
UN? Does he prefer the still-
born Bernadotte baby to peace?

RILEY'S REPORT
, :t
AS A MILITARY man

TYPEWRITERS

have read-'and understood the
recent report by Gen. Riley on
the military situation in Pales-
tine. That situation cannot be
changed by endless debate in
UN councils.
Is Marshall aligning himself
with Bevin to the extent of us-
ing force outside the UN? Is
that where Forrestal came in?
Was Bevin's patently incriminat-
ing admission a week ago about
the presence of British army
regulars in Transjordan intend-
ed as a hint in a certain direc-
tion?
The new Bevin-Marshall-For-
restal intrigue is doomed to fail-
ure. They will be foiled by
President Truman who, accord-
ing to information I received
from a most trustworthy source,
is about to issue a strongly-
worded directive to his sub-
ordinates.

DOUBLE TALK ,
THERE IS MUCH talk about
the Arab refugees. But there is
ominous silence about the many
thousands of Jews thrown out of
their livelihood in Arab coun-
tries. In Damascus alone over
5,000 Jews are reported to be
unemployed and despondent.
Abdullah wants peace but ap-
parently he is, afraid of British
reprisals and attempts at assassi-
nation by Mufti adherents lie
will act only in concert with
other Arabic powers.

date of the termination of the British mandate. The
question was, who will establish order when the
British army withdraws?
"Israel proved her ability to keep order in spite
of the fact that some of the opponents of the Novem-
ber resolution invaded the country, and in .spite of
the severe curtailment of the activities of the Israeli
armies by an embargo on the shipment of arms to
Palestine at a time when the Invader was receiving
assistance.

"THE DELAY in implementing the November reso-
lution and in recognizing the obvious fact of the
emergence of a new State, able to solve all of its
problems, can never be blamed on any' Soviet veto.
The organs of the United Nations failed exclusively
due to the policy of selfish and shortsighted expediency
pursued by some other powers .. ."

$32,000 Is liaised
in UJA Campaign

Harry Zinder, press attache of
the Israeli mission in Wash-
ington, who addressed the mid-
west JWB conclave here. (See
story on page 2.)

MT. CLEMENS — Advance
gifts passed the $32.000 mark as
the United Jewish Appeal drive
here rounded the - home stretch.
The goal is $45,000.
Impetus to the campaign was
given by Lt. Itzchak ben Men-
ach, 19-year-old Israeli army of-
ficer, who described the inspir-
ing heroism of determined Is-
raelim at a dinner recently.
Among the guests were De-
troiters Louis Berry, regional
director of the UJA campaign,
and Joseph Holtzman. Another
notable present was Harvey
Goodman of New York, UJA
field director.
So impressed were the wait-
resses serving dinner that they

quietly took up a collection
among themselves.
This, according to Max Elkin,
chairman, is only one of the
many manifestations of non-
Jewish support to the drive.

8 Mile Merchants
Spur I-Iarmony

Although organizing activities
have been in progress only a
few weeks, 14 merchants in the
Eight Mile Road area have al-
ready decided to band together
to aid Negro civic causes, the
Jewish Community Council re-
ported.
They have signed up as mem-
bers of the Eight Mile Road
chapter of th East Side Mer-
chants Association, long known
for its brilliant record in inter-
racial work.
The chapter plans to partici-
pate in fund-raising drives of
various Negro groups and to
cooperate in other ways with
organizations in the area.
