Friday, November 5, I94S Federation Accused Temple Israel Tots Mark Succoth Bnai Brith Charges Sabotage' (Continued from page 1) with the SOS Drive also has not the slightest basis in fact for a number of reasons, includ- ing the fact, first, that upon thorough discussion we discov- ered that the only field in which our campaign conflicted with the SOS Drive was in the food line, and that, only to the extent that Bnai Brith intended at that time to send bags to individual fam- ilies. To meet this objection Bnai Brith agreed to forego solicita- tion of food in this manner and actually did recall the bags which had been sent out. Furthermore, this extension does not interfere with the SOS Drive because the one clay Drive on Oct. 31 of SOS will not be hurt or hampered by the ex- tension of the Aid to Israel Campaign on Oct. 26. • • • Your entire attitude, partic- ularly in the light of recent action, indicates very conclusive- ly that there was never any good faith intention to cooperate in this activity. From the very beginning when Bnai Brith first called meetings to arrange for the organization of this Campaign, at my per- sonal insistence', the Committee endeavored to get representation from the Federation as well as every other agency in the Jewish Community to participate in the planning of the Campaign, so as to make certain that there would be no conflict with any other activity and that we would have the wholehearted cooperation of the entire Jew- ish Community in this endeavor. • • • Your organization studiously and steadfastly refused to par- ticipate in these meetings, while , • 1.1 rage Eleven DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE at the same time endeavoring to place strict limitations on the activities through the medium of decrees and orders. Frankly, as I told you, it was my impression and is now my conviction that you hoped that this campaign would be so un- successful that you could ignore it and that you only called us into session when the activity had captured popular appeal to a degree where citywide inter- est was evident. Upon discovery that plans had been completed for a campaign, which gave every indication of success, you called Bnai Brith leadership to a meeting for the first time to discuss the sphere of planned activity. • • • Notwithstanding your original refusal to participate in the planning of this Campaign, I, nevertheless, grasped at the op- portunity to demonstrate that Bnai Brith was eager to prove that it is a highly disciplined organization and anxious to co- operate with all existing agen- cies to eliminate any possible conflict and to demonstrate to. Federation leadership the high ethical plane upon which Bnai Brith service is rendered. To demonstrate that Bnai Brith was not seeking the limelight by conducting a popular activity, we offered the Federation the sponsorship of the Drive, with the privilege of utilizing the entire Bnai Brith carefully or- ganized committee in such man- ner as you desired. • • • Notwithstanding the foregoing factual situation, without prior. notice of such intent, you rushed into print, locally and national- ly, to discredit Bnai Brith and made it appear that Bnai Brith 257_5?Sa57_52Sas-es-ese..S esese.S625 Fall and Winter Rates NOW IN. EFFECT... at the COLONIAL was acting in violation of agree- ment and to convey the impres- sion that Bnai Brith was ex- ploiting the Israel situation to gain glory and popularity.. The true facts of the situation make this charge unjustified and untrue. A retraction on your part for the injustices done to a fine service orgainzation, and partic- ularly to a committee which has worked zealously and selflessly in the interest of a noble cause, is altogether in place. Sincerely yours, (Signed) ISADORE STARR, President, Greater Detroit Bnai Brith Council. 40 0 .„.:r4.4tiKh T.
