The Bnai Brith Hillel Founda- tion will celebrate its national silver jubilee Sunday. With the help of the late Rab- bi Benjamin Frankel, Bnai Brith organized its first foundation in 1923 at the University of Illinois. During the past 25 years Hillel, under the inspired geidance of Dr. A. L. Sachar, has become a national institution with founda- tions and counselorships on over 185 campuses in North America. Rabbi Arthur J. Lelyveld is the new national director. Hillel at the University of Michigan is in its 22nd year of service to the Jewish student body. s By arraagement with the Ann Arbor Jewish Community, it oc- cupies its present site at 2101 Hill, and services nearly 2,000 students. The jubilee festivities Sunday will include an introduction by Rabbi Herschel Lymon, director of the Ann Arbor chapter. How- ard Free-flan, president of the Hillel student council, will wel- come guests on behalf of the stu- dent body. Among the speakers will be Dr. Alexander Ruthven, president of the University of Michigan; Dr. Franklin Litt 1, director of the Student Reli ious Association; and Mrs. Osias Zwerdling, presi- dent of the Bet Israel Center. Mrs. L. M. Si ms, Samuel Lieb, Sam Meisel, Is lore Starr and Sidney Karbal of Detroit will also give brief addresses. $45,000 for WA Mt. Clemens' Goal Max Elkin Named Campaign Leader The Mt. Clemens Jewish com- munity has launched a $45,000 campaign on behalf , of the United Jewish Appeal. Chairman is Max Elkin, civic leader and owner of the Colonial Hotel. He is assisted by Mrs. Harry Malbin, Women's Division chair- man; Dr. Joseph N. Scher, special gifts chairman; Samuel J. Levine, arrangement commit- tee head; Isaac Barnett, treas- urer; Samuel Kramer, captain of the five white teams; and Abe Levine, captain of the blue teams. "We recognize that $45,000 is a large sum," Elkin said, "but it is the basic minimum that is needed from our community if we are to cope with the situa- tion presented to us by the plight of the Jews of Europe and the historic opportunities that exist for the reconstruction of Jewish life in Palestine." Zager Dramatic Group Plans Variety Show A variety show will be pre- sented by the dramatic group of the Rabbi Mandell M. Zager Chapter, Bnai Brith, at its fund- raising meeting, Nov. 3 at Bnai Moshe. Entitled "Bnai Brith Varieties," the show is being directed by Eve Meister, assisted by Sarah Schore. The grand finale of the drive will be the annual fund-raising event, Nov. 22 in the main auditorium of Masonic Temple. Headlining the program will be Tito Guizar and his "Singing Mariachis," whri will present the "Romantic Mexico of Yesterday" and "Gay Mexico of Today," highpoints of Carnegie Hall's music season. Guizar is the internationally famed star of stage, screen and radio, whose voice has sold more records south of the border than any artist since Caruso. A native of Guadalajara, Mexico, he is a graduate of the Mexican National Conservatory and of St. Mark's Academy in Milan and has starred in Mexican and grand opera and with the Chicago Opera Company. Complete with lavish costumes and settings, the program will be similar in every detail to any that might be staged before a Latin audience. Guizar will wear an $8,000 costume and play a $25,000 guitar. Besides Mexican arias and folk songs, he will present popular numbers he made famous, including "Brazil" and "El Rancho Grande." Colorful Ceremony to Mark Tirvah Chapter Anniversary The, movie, "Assignment in Tel Aviv," will highlight a meet- ing of the Louis Marshall Busi- ness and Professional Chapter, Bnai Brith, at 8:30 p. m., Tues- day, in the Hotel Tidier.
