Friday, October 22, 1941 DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE Page Sixteen • Our Athletes Central High's &IV Fortunes at low State JWV Groups Join to Aid Israel By FRANK BECKMAN HIGH'S football C ENT::AL team just ain't gol it this year. ..eme The Trail- blazers rarely have been not- ed as a grid- iron power, but the 1948 eleven seems to f all even below this usual subpar status. What was its worst beating in many sea- Beckman sons Was administered to Cen- tral 11 Southeastern last Fri- day. The score was 61 • to CI!!! For the losers, it was a matter of lack of talent as manifested in poor blocking and tackling. Especially glaring was the weak- ness of their ends on defense. Southeastern backs swept the Blue and White .flanks for con- sistent long gains, utilizing this advantage to the hilt. Pi titittit; '- . It was beaten 26 to 0 by Mackenzie and 41 to 12 by Cooley before the Southeastern fiasco. This doesn't mean that all is • futile for the 'Blazers. They battled their latest opponents minus three of their regulars, a prodigious disadvantage for any aggregation. Yet, it will require inspired performances by such first- stringers as Stan Knapp, Aubrey Meyerson, Mel Dubrinsky, Herb Chad, Sam Tarnow, Herb Weller, Herbtrt Gelfand and Neil Spit- zeizen if the Centralites are to escape perhaps their worst sea- son in the school's history. • • • H.R.
