20,000 SOS Bags

Congress Women
in Member Drive

New Cultural Center

Mailed Out Here

One-Day Campaign
Scheduled for Oct. 31

Mandel Berman, chairman of
the Detroit SOS committee, has
announced that SOS bags have
been mailed to every known
Jewish home in Detroit.
Berman urged all Jewish wo-
men to see that the bags are full
of needed supplies and ready to
be picked up on SOS Day, Oct.
31.
On Thursday night, over 100
volunteer workers gathered at
the Jewish Center for a "bag-
folding" party. Over 20,000 were
processed and mailed.
Berman requested that anyone
who did not receive an SOS
bag last year to notify Helen
Alpert, Owen Bldg., WO. 5-3939,
and one will be sent to him.
At a report meeting at Beth
Aaron, Ruben Gold, chairman of
men's groups, announced that 75
per cent of the quota of cars and
drivers needed for the drive has
been met.
"We feel confident that the
men's groups will more than
meet their goal," he said.
SOS bags should be in every
Jewish home by Wednesday.

Brestoff Orchestra
Slated by Zionists

Phil Brestoff and his 10 piece
orchestra plus a Latin American
band will play for the Balfour
Ball Saturday, Nov. 13 at the
Statler Hotel.
This outstanding social event
will help finance the American
Zionist Fund, formerly known as
the Expansion Fund, Dr. Philip
Lachman, program chairman,
pointed out.
"The community ought to re-
spond magnificently to the ap-
peal of Harry Cohen, our chair-
man, because by doing so they
will contribute to two fund-rais-
ing activities," Morris M. Jacobs,
district president, declared.
"The Zionist office which is
partly maintained by the Balfour
Ball must be prepared for any
task it may be called upon to un-
dertake to keep open the Ameri-
can lifeline to Israel."

PROSECUTING ATTORNEY

DEMOCRAT

To My Jewish Friends:

To the Jewish people everywhere, whose undying struggle to re-
estahlish your homeland in Palestine has dually been rewarded, I want
to extend my sincere hope that the New Year may witness greater and
ever greater progress in the development of the State of Israel.
One of my most cherished memories is my experience at Lake Sue-
cam, where, with Jewish and. Christian Lawyers and Judges from all
parts of the Country, we pleaded with the United States Delegation to
approve the partition of Palestine and recognize the State of Israel. We
shared in your exhultat ion when Israel was actually born.
Bet the struggle is only beginning. A vast job remains to be done,
at home and abroad, if Israel shall achieve its historic role. All -right-
minded people must aid in this task.
It is my fervent hope that the Jewish year 5709 will see the State
of Israel take its rightful place in the Family of Democratic Nations.
