confidential talks with members
of the Israeli delegation. This
disclosure came following a bit-
ter denunciation of the Western
Powers by Andrei Vishinsky,
deputy Soviet Foreign Minister,
for "sabotaging" the previous
UN decision on Palestine.
It was learned this week that
six Arab states are opposing the
application of Transjordan for
admission to the United Nations
on the grounds that King Ab-
dullah is unwilling to accept the
conclusions of Count Bernadotte,
that Israel "is an unalterable
fact."
This is regarded in UN circles
as the most serious rift in the
Arab camp since the Arab
League was established.
Jose Garcia Granados, Gua-
temalan UN delegate, declared
in Paris that the Bernadotte
proposals could provide a basis
for a settlement if they are
"very substantially amended."
Granados said he would fight
all attempts to take away Mil
of the Negev from Israel. He
expressed the opinion that Is-
rael should agree to the estab-
lishment of Haifa as a free port
and Lydda as a free airport.
An order to Israelis and Arabs
to stop shooting at each other
and to restore immediately the
boundary lines which were es-
tablished at the start of the sec-
ond truce was issued in Tel
Aviv by Dr: Bunch,'.

champions of liberty and right-
eousness.
"Their love for their ancient
Homeland, their prayers and
striving for its redemption have
kept up their courage and hope
for the restoration of the Jewish
nationhood and achieved the
magnificent result.
"The Jewish people may meet
the •new year with confidence
and expectation of a brighter and
happier future. The world in
which in the past the exiled
Israelites suffered so much looks
now with admiration at the he-
roic struggle of Israel to regain
its rightful place among the free
nations,
"Men of good will everywhere
pray and hope together with you
that the new year will bring
strength, security and peace to
the reborn nation of Israel.

"AMERICANS OF . other faiths
send their good wishes to their
Jewish neighbors on Rosh Hash-
onah, taking pride in the contri-
bution of the American Jewish
community throughout the years
to the greatness of our Country,
to her democracy and her ideals.
"Together with you we pray
that these ideals shall serve as a
beacon light to mankind in its
struggle for equality, justice and
freedom. Together with you we
also pray that the year 5709 may
be inscribed as the, year of the
resurgence of morality and
righteousness in the world and
that peace shall reign and hu-
manity prosper."
