First Nonsectarian
`11' Headed 1) ■ Jews

UNIVERSITY, the
first Jewish-sponsored cOedu-
catioral, nonsectarian institution
of higher learning, will open its
•doors to the first freshman class
of over 100 on Thursday, Oct
14, thus bringing a dream of
years into reality.
The school, located at Wal-
tham, Mass., has a campus of
100 acres and eight major build-
ings. During the past six months,
a modernization program has
been under way, converting the
buildings into dormitories for
the men, and women, apartments
for faculty, class rooms, and la-
boratories.
In addition, the library is be-
ing expanded to accommodate
30,000 volumes. Administration
and faculty offices are also pro-
vided.

SACHAR IS PRESIDENT
"TILE BRANDEIS STORY" is
a fascinating one. Born in the
minds of a group of New Eng-
land business men years ago, it
received sudden impetus when
the campus and buildings be-
came available because of the
closing of another institution.
Then the work was intensified.
A drive for funds was initiated,
a building program agreed upon,
and finally, in May, 1948, Dr.
Abram Leon Sachar, was chosen
as president. Formerly the na-
tional director of the Hillel
Foundations, Dr. Sachar brings
long administrative and educa-
tional experience to his new
post.

it may live up to the high con-
