MIAS Aids 10,321
to Leave Europe

WASHINGTON (WNS)—
American immigration laws and
their administration show the
effects of a discredited isolation-
ist, racist and bureaucratic ap-
proach, and must be revised to
conform with Am e rican interests
and principles, Irving M. Engel,
chairman of the administrative
committee of the American Jew-
ish Committee, declared at hear-
ings of the Senate judiciary com-
mittee.

NEW YORK—ln a report coy.
ering die activities of IIIAS
(Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society)
during the first six months of
1948, Isaac I.. Asofsky, execu-
tive director, disclosed that IIIAS
offices throughout Europe helped
10,321 Jews leave the continent.
Significant is the fact that the
11 HIAS offices in Germany and
Austria assisted 3,534 DP's to
leave the occupied areas during
the first half of 1948 as compared
with 2,375 during the same pe-
riod in 1947.

A plea for the "Americaniza-
tion" of U. S. immigration laws
and the rationalization of gov-
ernment immigration machinery
was made in a 27,000-word pre-
sentation by Engel on behalf of
the American Jewish Committee
and of four other major national
Jewish organizations, the Hebrew
Immigrant Aid Society, the Jew-
ish Labor Committee, the United
Service for New Americans and
the Synagogue Council of Amer-
ica.
