with their activity . on behalf of
Zionism. At Atlantic City, an
estimated 4,000 delegates attend-
ing an annual Hadassah conven-
tion approved a budget of $4,-
720,Q00 for the coming year. The
greatest part of this money was
intended for Hadassah's medical
program in Palestine.
At another convention at At-
lantic City, the United Jewish
Appeal determined to try to ob-
tain $250,000,000. Of this sum
$146,250,000 was to be allocated
to the United Palestine Appeal.
These organizations and others
contributed money for Palestine,
while many American Jews con-
tributed, besides their blood.
Blood banks were opened in a
number of American cities, such
as New York, Philadelphia and
Chicago.
Jews also responded to the
call for membership by the
Zionist Organization of Ameri-
ca, which enrolled 100,000 mem-
bers during the three-month pe-
riod ending Jan. 2, 1948.. More-
over, they organized mass dem-
onstrations to help their fellow-
Jews in Palestine.
One rally, held in New York
and sponsored by the ZOA,
brought an overflow crowd listen-
ing to leading personalities in
the :ge auditorium of Manhat-
tan Center.
At another rally, about 100,000
Jews were estimated to have
come, in spite of inclement
weather, to Madison Square Gar-
den and its vicinity in New York
for a celebration on May 16,
marking the establishment of the
Jewish State. • • •

charged with shooting Jews. In
France, a former French Com-
issar for Jewish Affairs, under
whose direction tire' first series
of Nazi-ordered Jewish laws was
said to have been promulgated,
was sentenced to death.
In Holland, a woman was
convicted of betraying Jews to
the Gestapo during the occupa-
Con.
From Prague came word of
the imposition of life imprison-
ment on a certain Czech charged
with bestraying his Jewish friend
to the Nazis.
In Romania, a life prison term
was given to a former Gestapo
head of a Transylvania town af-
ter he was convicted of respon-
sibility in the mass execution of
about 60,000 Jews in Galicia.
Such sentences and execu-
tions, nevertheless, did not elim-
inate witi-Semitism from many
parts
the world.
Arab lands, in particular,
were said to have been' swept
by a surge of anti-Semitism.
From Syria came reports of the
expulsion of Jewish students
from the American University.
From Ira% Word came of
demonstrators in Teheran shout-
ing "death to the Jews."
Other reports later spoke of
pogroms against Jews in French
Morocco, Tripoli and Egypt.
World Jewry at the same time
did obtain valuable aid in many
ways. About 450 Jewish or-
phaned children were admitted
to Holland and given permission
to remain there for two years
prior to their expected depar-
ture for Palestine.
Announcement was made that
the property the Nazis looted
from Hungarian Jews, which was
found in the French zones of
Germany and Austria, would be
restored to the Jews of Hungary
by the French occupation au-
thorities.
The Joint Distribution Com-
mittee was very helpful. In
1947, it spent $73,000,000 to aid
the Jews of the world.
Likewise, help came from a

amation League of Bnai Brith
was able to make public is con-
clusions after a survey of anti-
Semitism in the United States
during the year 1947.
According to this survey, there
was less "organized anti-Semitic
activity than in former years"
while people showed "an un-
thinking acceptance of the activi-
ties of less overt bigots, who, un-
der cloaks of respectability,
spread hatred of Jews."
Primarily to fight anti-Semi-
tism in America, a report was
adopted at Philadelphia in which
the sum of $6,104,540 was set as
the year's goal for the Joint De-
fense Appeal.

was the voyage of the "Exodus,"
when 4,000 Jews actually reached
the shores of Palestine only to
find themselves intercepted by
the British navy and returned
to the DP camps in Germany.
British purpase was defeated,
however. Since then almost all
of those on the "Exodus" have
returned to Palestine.
The "Exodus" was not the only
vessel with "illegals" intercepted
by the British. There were doz-
ens of others. However, despite
British vigilance, thousands of
Jews entered Palestine with the
daring and brilliant aid of the
compactly organized Yishtw.
While the year marked a slight
improvement in the plight of
the Jews in Europe, it also saw
little amelioration in the situa
tion of the Jews in the DP
camps. After three years of
peace, the DP camps were still
an ugly sight.

ACTIVITIES OF Jews in the
U.S.A. also revolved about aid
in other directions aside from
Palestine. The National Jewish
Welfare Board, for example,
adopted a budget of $1,487,000
largely in the interest of Jewish
centers and Jewish community
services in the United States.
Another instance of aid for
Jews in other directions aside
from Palestine during the year
can be seen in the adoption of a IN OTHER LANDS

'Forgotten Jews'

NEW YORK (WNS)—The des-
perate plight of one million
Jews in North Africa and the
Middle East, among them 150,-
000 impoverished children, was
brought to light by a represen-
tative of the Committee for the
Forgotten Million, who departed
for North Africa where he will
make a month-long survey of
the needs of Jewish communi-
ties in Morocco, Algeria, Tu-
nisia and other countries.
Maurice Enright, member of
the board of the Committee for
the Forgotten Million, declared
prior to his departure that
"there are a million destitute
Sephardic Jews in North Africa
and the Middle East living in
deplorable conditions.
"They have been neglected for
years by world Jewry," he said,
"making them literally a for-
gotten million."

In the two years before World
War II, German Jews made up
more than 50 percent 'of the
total number of immigrants to
Palestine.
