Bernadotte Plan O. K. Called Bevin Retreat

(Jewish World News Service)
THE ANNOUNCEMENT by Foreign Secretary Bevin
that the British goyernment is willing to accept
Count Bernadotte's peace proposal for Palestine is
one of the most significant decisions made on that
complicated problem. It compares in significance with
the American recognition of Israel, with Russia's
support of the new State and with the decision of
the UN on Partition.

IT CERTAINLY marks a retreat from the pre-
Vious anti-Israel policy of the British foreign office
which has done so much to retard a settlement and
to
embitter relationship between' the British and the
Jews. For the British acceptance of the martyred
mediator's plan means in the first place, British recog-
nition of the State of Israel and this, of course, means

states of Israel will recognize the fact of Israel's
existence.
This, quite apart from everything else, is a land-
mark in the history of the Jewish struggle for state-
hood and is a definite victory for Israel.
True, there are still a number of specific diffi-
culties to overcome, but in principle the British an-
nouncement marks a radical.. change for the better in
the notorious Bevin policy and as such, is a hopeful
augury for the future of Israel.

THE ASSASSINATION of Count Bernadotte was
Clot just "One More Murder", as the strongly pro-
Israel New York Post stated editorially and other
friends of Israel repeated. It was not just another
political murder in the long chain of terror started in
Palestine with the killing of Lord Moyne.
Those who evaluate it as such are making an
error of judgment and they gravely undervaluate the

is
not merely political; it descends in horror and bru-

the political crimes of the 19th century and even of
our own age had never before fallen to.
It stands in a class all of its own and is not to
be compared with other political murders, good or
evil.
.
It can he compared only with one other terrible
crime of our days—the assassination of Gandhi. Both
are marks of a new decline of humanity's moral
values and they mark a danger point in the decline
of morality more than of politics.

DURING THE glorious days of 5708—when the State of
Israel was proclaimed and the forces of reaction which
sought to destroy the Jewish State were halted—.

The Jewish people the world over drew great spiritual strength
from the YISUV, led by the 350,000 pioneers of the HISTADRUT.
The base of our Jewish State was made secure by heroic dem-
onstrations of valor and strength; thousands of newcomers were
brought to Israel; new co-operative settlements were created
throughout the Land; and co-operative enterprises and institu-
tions were strengthened and new ones launched in order to ab-
sorb the newcomers.
