NEW YORK —The disappear-
ance' of the great centers of
Jewish culture and learning in
Europe during the occupation by
• the Nazi horde has posed many
serious problems for world Jewry.
Many Jewish artists and in-
tellectuals were among the 6,000-
000 who were slaughtered. Those
who were able to escape were
scattered in the far corners of
the earth. In consequence, Eur-
ope has lost her position as the
richest source of Jewish cultural
tradition.
Among other things, the in-
spiration for Jewish sacred music
has dried up in Europe, and we
must look to other centers of
Jewish life to fill the void.
CENTER IN TILE U. S.
For the most part the center
of gravity of Jewish activity has
shifted to the United States. As in
other fields, we in the United
States must fall back on our own
resources in the preparation of
Cantors for our congregations.

States.

SERVES ALL GROUPS
It will train Cantors, directors
of music, choir leaders, organists
and other musical functionaries,
and it will foster research and
creative work in the field of
Jewish sacred music.
The Hebrew Union College

It will concentrate on the train-

the Hebrew Union College is also

NEW YORK (WNS)—For both
political and psychological rea-
sons Russia is not anxious to
identify itself with Israel, Alex-
ander Wirth declared in a re-
cent article in the Nation. Wirth,
who had recently visited Russia,
writes from London.
Russian Communists, he stat-
ed, never favored Zionism,
which they considered "an ab-
surd form of nationalist extrem-
ism. largely financed by people
in the United States. And they
will he careful not to play into
the hands of foreign propagan-
dists waiting for the chance to
revive the Nazi formula coup-
ling 'Jewry' and 'Bolshevism'!"'
It has been "their policy all
along not to antagonize the Arab
world unduly," Wirth wrote,
"and to demand partition is as
far as they are likely to go. The
recognition of Israel, with its
implication that the Jews might
get arms and supplies from Rus-
sia. could hardly be avoided.
"There were many angry corn.
tnents on the 'British-run' Trans-
jordan army, but the Russians
would hardly want to give strong
support to either side."
The real reason why so few
Jews are to be found today in
key political positions in Rus-
sia, Wirth said, is that "Jews
have not such single-track minds
as Russians, and the Trotzkyist
opposition was largely Jewish."
