DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE

Support of Bernadotte Plan
by Beyin Viewed As Retreat

(Continued from page 3)
was in no way a representative
of a foreign or native tyrnny
that sought to enslave the peo-
ple whom he came to serve.
Like most human beings, he
was not infallible and free from
prejudices and errors, but these
errors did not flow from the
same selfish and greedy source
of open power and imperialistic
politics which seeks its own, or
its group enhancement at the
expense of others.
He had no force behind him
except the force of public opin-
ion and morality. Ile represent-
ed not a single state, or gov-
ernment, but the whole of hu-
manity.
His was probably the first
experiment of its kind in mod-
ern history. It was an experi-
ment in humanitarianism, in a
new way of dealing with hu-
man problems.

THIS PLACED Count Berna-
. dotte's mission in a category of
its own which cannot and
should never have been com-
pared with that of any other
political mission.
The usual dubious explana-
tions and justifications for polit-
ical murder do not apply in his
case. Even if he had commit-
ted many more and graver er-
rors than he did, humanitarian-
ism and sacredness of his mis-
sion should have sanctified and
protected him from harm.
The fact that some people of
Israel failed to realize this dis-
tinction and desecrated the sanc-
tity of his mission with a bloody
act of murder, is a greater trag-
edy than the killing of the man
himself.
It is a sign of spiritual and
moral decline which the civilized
world had a right not to ex-
pect from an ancient moral
people like the Jews.
Even when the political

storm over the assassination of
Bernadotte will blow over, the
larger spiritual problem which
his murder by Israelis raises,
will remain.
It is probably the gravest
problem facing the new State
of Israel, graver than the war.
than recognition, than' loans and
all the array of political and
economic issues facing the new
State.
For of what use is the gain-
ing of all these worldly goods
by the new State and losing its
soul

THERE IS ONE aspect in the
whole of the terrible tragedy
revolving around the murder of
Count Bernadotte that permits
of a hopeful outlook. This is
that the foul deed may lead to
the final extermination of the
terroristic groups which have
plagued the Yishuv in Palestine
since the assassination of the
late Chaim Arlosoroff to the
present day.
For the latest dastardly crime
of the Sternists certainly was
not an isolated case. It was
the rotten fruit of a long growth
and development which began
15 years ago with the rise of
fascist revisionism and culmi-
nated in the Nazi acts of the
Irgun and Sternists of the last
two years.

the Jewish community both in
Palestine and abroad, which
made drastic action in dealing
with these parties and move-

THE PRESENT outrage gives
the Israeli government an op-
portunity to do what liberal
and progressive Zionists have
been wanting to do for' years
and what the Israeli government
has been engaged in doing since
May 15—to cut out the can-
cerous growths from the healthy
social body of Israel.
Premier Ben Gurion's recent
action in disbanding the Irgun
and Sternist armies was, of
course, a part of the same oper-
ation.

Strange as it may seem, there
was some opposition to this ac-
tion on the part of the more
reactionary political parties of
Israel. The assassination of Her-.
nadotte has opened the eyes of
many people in Israel and
abroad, who were blind to the
danger of the dissident and
terrorist elements and who,
while denouncing them officially,
secretly applauded the "boys"
and admired their "heroic" acts.
The present unspeakable crime
will doubtless change the entire
atmosphere and attitude towards
dissidentism and terrorism in
Palestine and will help the Is-
raeli government in cleaning up
its own house
