American Chalutz Movement
Spurred by Israel's Rebirth

JEWISH YOUTH has in the
past, reacted to Zionism in a
variety of ways. The most per-
sonal identification with the
cause has come from the "Cha-
lutzim" (pioneers), those young
men and Women who decided to
cast tit it lot with the Jews of
Palt.-;tne by settling there and
workire towards the most vital
interest, of the community.
Some of the ZiorMst youth
groups in America have Clialut-
ziut as their entire program. The
others merely include it as an
important phase of their activi-
ties; hit even these usually
&insider their Chalutz elements
as the vanguards of their move-
ments. Thus, if we're looking for
permanent results in America of
recent events, in Israel, the re-
sponse to Chalutziut since May
t1-4 might give us an important

SURVEY CONDUCTED
HERE ARE a few facts gath-
ered by a brief survey conducted
among American Zionist youth
groups.

GROWTH IS RAPID
HASHOMER HADATI is an-
other exclusively Chalutz or-
ganization. It is orthodox in
character, combining the ideal
of self-labor with that of Bibli-
cal tradition.
Its motto, "Torah Veavodah"
(Torah and Work) expressed its
concept of the broad fulfillment
of Jewish tradition. A younger
organization than Hashomer Hat-
zair, it has also grown rapidly
during the last few months.
The Chalutz arms of the other
Zionist youth groups have also
expanded a great deal. These in-
clude Plugat Aliyah, an affiliate
of the General Zionist move-
ment, and Habonim, the youth
movement of the Labor Zionist
Organization, which has added
150 new members to its chalutz
arm since the proclamation as
compared to about 70 for the
entire preceding year.
Habonim describes itself as "la-
borite and liberal in our ap-
proach to labor" and believes in
the formation of the Jewish
State as a "Jewish cooperative
commonwealth." '

opening of the Haifa refineries,
addressed by British Consul Gen-
eral Cyril Morriott to "compe-
