non-Governmental social body;
(2) Help the immigrants in
their first stages of colonization;
(3) Assist the State of Israel
industrially and financially;
(4) Act as the public relations

These tasks will require a budget
probably bigger than that of the
State of Israel itself and will pro-

a generation to come.

NEW YORK is now full with
interesting, colorful and signifi-
cant Jewish visitors from all over
the world. These are Jewish writ-
ers, poets, dramatists, historians
and artists who have come from
every corner of the globe to at-
tend the unique international
gathering of the Jewish Culture
Congress which opened at Car-
negie Hall this week.
An international Jewish gath-
ering is always a colorful affair,
but this particular one has more
color, poignancy and human in-
terest than any other.
• • •
FOR THESE visitors are not
ordinary Jews of business or la-
bor, not even the well-known
type of social, relief and commu-
nal workers which has become
so popular in recent years. These
are literally the salt of the Jew-
ish spiritual earth, its creative
workers, artists and men of
spirit.
These people are not successes
in the American, or even Euro-
pean sense of the world. Most of
them are poor and probably
"failures," people least adjusted
to our cruel and practical age.
But the most glamorous con-
ventions, congresses and gather-
ings in Jewry cannot compare
with this gathering of several
hundred creative Jewish men and
women who have gathered to dis-
cuss the future of their language
and culture.

Survivors Assail
Leniency to Nazi

BERLIN (WNS)-The lenien-
cy accorded Ilse Koch, wife of
the former Nazi commander of
the Buchenwald concentration
camp, by Gen. Clay, who com-
muted her life sentence to four
years imprisonment, has aroused
a storm of criticism among Jew-
ish survivors of the Nazi camps
and among anti-Nazi GermanAt
Frau Koch was sentenced af-
ter having been found guilty of
sadistic practices against thou-
sands of Buchenwald concentra-
tion camp inmates.
Frau Koch was accused of hav-
ing used the skin of camp in-
mates to make lampshades. In
an Army report, Clay asserted
that the evidence of Frau
Koch's participation in the Buch-
enwald murders did not warrant
imprisonment for life and the
sentence was considered exces-
sive." -
