Weizmann Raps U. S. for Recognition Delays

(By Jewish World News Service)

R. CHAIM WEIZMANN in an interview in Ge-

D neva with Birtley Crum, editor of the New York

Star and former member of the Anglo-American
Palestine Commission,-clarified the position of several
\
issues before Israel.
According to Dr. Weizmann, there is a "logjam"
now in the matter of /the recognition of Israel by

"IF THE UNITED STATES, through President
Truman, gives us de jure recognition nnw, I believe
that all western powers, meaning France, Italy, Bel-
gium, Holland and Luxembourg would follow and
perhaps even England would recognize us," he said.
"The effect on the Arab states would be immediate.
It would mean permanent peace not only in Israel,
but throughout the Middle-East". •

Dr. Weizmann was outspoken also on the Arab
refugee question.
"I do not know", he said, "why the Arabs ran
from their homes, nobody drove them. But whatever
the reason, we must do for 'them everything possible
now. They are citizens of Israel now and they will
be citizens in every sense of the word.
"Certainly we will never disenfranchise anyone
because he is not a Jew. Israel is a democratic lay
State, not a theocratic state, and Jews, of all people,
who have endured greatest ordeals in undemocratic
countries, will be the first to make sure their State
is above all democratic".

FINALLY, Dr. Weizmann utilized the occasion
to associate himself fully with the position of the
American Zionists on the question of separation of
the World Zionist Organization from the Israel gov-
ernment.

he almost repeated the words of Dr. Emanuel Neu-

Considering the earlier frequent disagreements
between the president of Israel and the American
Zionists, the clear-cut public declaration of Dr. Weiz-
mann on this important internal Zionist question, is
of greatest significance.
