INCLE AVROHOM was get-
' ting to feet a little old and
broken down. He read that
gland doctors could rejuvenate
old peopre and decided to visit a
specialist in this field. After the
doctor examined Uncle Avrohom,
he told mm such a gland opera-
tion was quite expensive.
"How expensive is it?" Uncle
Avrohom asked.
"Well," said the doctor, "If you
want me to rejuvenate you so
that you will be like a man of
30, it will cost you in the neigh-
borhood of $1,000."
"A very expensive neighbor-
hood," commented Uncle Avro-
loom.
'If you want me to make you
again like yoti were when you
were 18 years old, it will cost
$2,500."
"Make me 18 again," said Un-
Avrohom.
The doctor performed the op-
eration, but Uncle Avrohom re-
fused to come across with the
money.
"I am 16 years old," he said,
"atA, according to law, I am not
responsible for my debts. My
patents are dead and cannot pay
them. If you sue me for the
money, saying I am more than
18, it will prove you a fraud."

minds Joe Welles about the doc-

tient.
"Your heart is quite sound,"

'But, doctor," was the reply,
"I am 70."
"There," beamed the doctor.
"What did I tell you?"

GREENSPAN BECAME a
Park Avenue society doctor and
once a year he would conde-
scendingly attend his poor rela-
tives' Seder. Much to his dis-
appointment, in the animated
coeversation which followed, his
poor relatives never seemed to
say anything that showed they
were suitably impressed with his
achievements.
At this year's Seder, one of
them piped up with the remark,
"Soy, doctor, I hear you treated
a man a couple of weeks ago for
a liver ailment and then he
died of a heart attack."
Outraged at this slur on his
pr ofessional skill from a poor
know-nothing, the doctor com-
pletely lost his dignity and
shouted:
"See here, cousin Morty, when
I treat someone for a liver trou-
ble—he cites .of liver trouble!"
__O—
"I THINK 11"S disgusting that
comedians like Cantor, Benny,
Jessel, Jolson and Berle should
earn twice ar.d three times as
much as members of Congress."
"Oh, I don't know. After all,
taking them as a whole, they are
often funnier."
—O—
CHARLES SAMUELS first
told this with great glee.
We're beholden to Barnard Ru-
bin for sending it on to us:
It was at a Hollywood house
party that I once heard Helen
Hayes talking about the dinner
she had attended the evening
before.
One of the guests was an out-
standing film director, and all
through the meal he kept
sounding off about the charm,
talent and other fine qualities
of his wife, who was away in
New York at the time.
"What a woman!" he exclaim-
ed. "My wife is exquisite, grace-
ful, shapely, a wit, the best-
dressed lady in America. She is
also a wonderful cook. A great
woman!"
When he finally stopped for
breath, the demure little extra
girl seated next to him sudden-
ly spoke:
"Please do me a favor, you
husband.
Either
ever-loving
stop talking about your wife—
or take your hand off my
knee."
—o—
MAN recently published a mon-
ologue by a machine gun which
bears repeating. The machine
gun speaks:
"I never give a hoot whether
the lads I mowed down were
Protestants, Catholics or Jews. I
never was the least bit fussy
about the shade of the skin I
sprayed.
"To me all men are equal—
equally brave, equally foolish,
equally doomed.
"It really kills me how—even
after all you folks have gone
through—some of you still can
sneer, snarl, giggle or growl at
the color or creed or birthplace
of someone who is not exactly
like you.
"That 'race' baloney, of course,
is cheap, easy stuff to dish out.
Gets you action, too.
"It needles different groups
into discriminating against each
other, lining up against each
other for advantage. Then fight-
ing each other for power. They'll
do it every time.
"And that's where I come in—
laughing at all of you, in short
bursts.
"Can I count on you. Are you
going to keep up this moron's
game of prejudice-peddling. Or
are you going to swear off it—
have no patience with it? It's
up to you."

Zeidler Origin
Traced to `Zeide'
in Surname Study
By N. PEARLROTH
Zeidler is a surname of curi-
ous origin. Its root is the Yid-
dish word Zeide, meaning
"grandfather". Etymologists still
debate whether the Yiddish
Zeide is derived from the Po-
lish "ctziadek" or the Russian
"dyed",
In former ages the mortality
among Jewish children was
pathetically high, When a child
died in a Jewish home, the
parents would strive pitifully
to save the lives of succeeding
children. One of the remedies
employed was the bestowal of a
magic name upon a succeeding
youngster.
One of these names was Zeide,
Zeidel or Zeidler. It was great-
ly favored because it suggested
grandfatherhood and a ripe old
age. The name was at first
only used as a given name. But
like all given names it eventual-
ly became a patronymic and a
permanent family name.
Zeidler is also a surname
borne by many non-Jews. But
its derivation is different. The
non-Jewish Zeidlers derive their
name from the trade of bee-
keeper.
