(Special to The Chronicle)

There is a shooting war in the Holy Land again.
The battle of Jerusalem reached alarming proportions
this week as Arab mortar shells crashed for the first time

have in fact made travesty of

"an act of high constructive

Arabs Turn Down
American Loan

WASHINGTON (Special) —
Saudi Arabia has refused a $15,-
000,000 U. S. loan because of its
displeasure with alleged Ameri-
can support of the Jewish cause
in Palestine, government offi-
cials revealed.
"We feel we would like to get
assistance from a friend and not
from someone helping our en-
emy," an Arab spokesman said.
Saudi Arabia deliberately per-
mitted a $15,000,000 credit ear-
marked for it at the Export-
Import Bank to expire on July
15 "because of the attitude of
the American government in
the Palestine situation," he said.

British Paper
Urges Recognition

LONDON (WNS) — The Man-
chester Guardian, England's fore-
most liberal newspaper this
week called upon the British
governmeni to recognize the fact
that Israel exists and to "ac-
knowledge the plain fact of its
existence."
Stating that "sooner or later it
will be necessary for the British
government to recognize the State
of Israel," the paper warned that
recognition must be made at the
propitious moment, and that mo-
ment, the paper stressed, is near
at hand.
To have given de facto recog-
nition too soon, the paper argued,
"might have encouraged Israel
to attempt tasks beyond its.
strength." But to give it too late,
it cautioned?' "would be an ill-
graced surrender to events."
