Egypt's Jews Face Annihilation

PARIS (WNS) — The Jewish
commun.ty in Egypt is facing
economic and physical annihila-
tion, with mob violence, mass
looting and pogroms rampant
thrOughout the country, it was
reported here this week by a
French traveller just returned
from Cairo.
During the past month, the
Frenchman declared, the situation
of the Jews in Egypt has proved
"highly alarming." Mass deten-
tion of Jews on slight pretexts
has increased and Jews are even
being arrested today for alleged
insults levelled against King
Farouk or for possessing Hebrew
literature.

SHOPS LOOTED

Jewish enterprises and shops
have been bombed and looted.
Bitterness against the Egyptian
Jew for Arab military losses in
Palestine has been strengthened.
Tile only Jews :n Egypt who feel
comparatively cafe, the French-
man assorted, are those who are
in Egyptian concentration camps.
Over 150 Jews have been killed,
01 have disappeared," during
mob attacks in the Egyptian cap-
ital, he said. On July 17, 20 Jews
required hospitalization following
a violent assault by an unidenti-
fied mob in the heart of the thea-
tre district in Cairo. On JJrly 20,
en organized Egyptian mob at-
tacked several trolleys at the
Malika Farina Place, Cairo's
chief streetcar junction, and

forced all European passengers to
leave the cars.

KNIFED IN BACK "

All those who were suspected
of being Jewish were brutally
slaughterea on the spot and the
dead bodies were shamefully mu-
tilated. Many cf the Jews were
knifed in the back and several
had their eyes pierced, he re-
vealed.

On July 21, the informant re-
pented, three Rabbis were drag-
ged into a Cairo slaughter house
and when the bodies were found,
the throats were slit from ear to
ear. On July 26, Jews living in
the neignborhaod of the Royal
Palace or in government-owned
homes were ordered to evacuate
the premises within 48 hours.

HOSPITALS PACKED

Arab mobs. the Frenchman
declared, forcibly aided the Jews
to comply with the order and
created a number of "panic-
stricken remot als" during which
several of the Jews were injured
and many Jewish possessions
were destroyed or appropriated
by the Arab mob,
Referring to the recent stoning
of the American Jew, Stephen
liaas, the Frenchman disclosed
that, contrary to initial Cairo re-
ports, Haas was knifed to death
and his body was found near the
Citadel with the nose and ears
severed.

In addition to the estimated
;50 Jews killed, the traveller as-
serted that 12t , 3ews are now
undergoing treatment in the
Jewish hospital at Cairo for
wounds rerwived during the scat-
tered poomis

POSITION BAD

Until July 28 ; it was further
reported, Egyptian police made

Hopkins' Papers
Implicate Britain

no effort to intervene or halt the
mob violence end mass looting.
Since that date, probably as a
result of strong representations
made to the Egyptian government
by Jefferson Patterson, the U.S.
charge d affaiies, regarding the
Haas murder, there has been
some tightening up of security
measures

However, the Frenchman em-
phasized, the position of the Jew
in Egypt continues to be a pre-
carious one. Terrorism against
the Jews has not subsided. Mass
looting of Jewish belongings and
basiness establishments has not
decreased. And the Jewish pop-
ulation in Egypt, he stressed, is
in constant tea'. of physical and
economic extermination.
