Zionists to Speed Up Immigration to Israel

(By Jewish World News Service)

But the war in Palestine has done away with that

ducted on a much larger scale than was antici-
intensified without regard to the absorptive ca-

pated by Zionist policy makers several months ago,
stated Benjamin Dorft, a well-known American in-
dustrialist and member of the Zionist executive,
who has now been placed by Dr. Emanuel Neu-
mann in charge of the new Zionist economic pro-
gram which was approlfed by the Zionist conven-
tion at Pittsburgh and is often referred to as the
Zionist "Marshall Plan."
The situation in Israel and in the Near East has
changed radically during the last few months, par-
ticularly since the Arab invasion of Palestine, Dorft
said in his first press interview as the new head of
the Zionist economic plan.
•
•
•
HE SAID THAT hitherto, Zionists generally ad-
hered to the policy of "absorptive capacity" which
they for years demanded from the mandatory power.

parity.

Hundreds of thousands of Jews from the European
camps, and still more from the Arab countries, must
be rushed into Israel because of the hazardous posi-
tion in which they find themselves and because of
the danger of another concerted attack by the Arab
states, Dorft stressed.
These immigrants will have to be supported, trained
for skilled labor and given employment within a
very short period. This is the big task of American
Jewry and of the new Zionist economic policy, said
Dorft.

IT WILL BE accomplished by a campaign for fi-
nancial and economic investments in Israel, as well
as by government loans which will soon be launched

in accordance with a vast plan of economic recon-
struction of Israel.
For that purpose the Israel Investment Corporation
with a capit* of $25,500,000 will soon be launched,
and another big enterprise, the Israel Equipment
Project, is already in operation.
Soon these various economic and financial activities
will become more widely known, and, according to
Dorft, will eclipse the More dramatic political and
even military aspects of the rebuilding of Israel.

Arab Unity Called Thing of the Past

By NATHAN ZIPRIN
TILE BOASTED unity among
the Arab states is a thing
of the past. . . Abdullah's state-
ment that he was giving careful
consideration to any future pro-
posal fur a permanent Palestine
peace settlement means he has
openly admitted readiness to
negotiate a separate peace with
Israel.
He was pressured into making
the premature announcement by
two developments—by the re-
port that the ex-Mufti of Jeru-
salem was planning to estab-
lish a provisional government
over the whole of Palestine and
by the disclosure that liberal
Arabs were contemplating to
set up a regime in the Arab
area in conformity with the UN
partition decision.
The Mufti's designs were ex-
clusively disclosed in this col-
umn two weeks ago . . . The
Mufti intends placing one of his
many cousins at the head of the
government until he feels the
time ripe for assumption of
leadership.
He is backed by Egypt. where
he has been advised to estab-
lish a government-in-exile and
capitalize on the British "Arab
exile" propaganda.

SIGNS OF PEACE
TALK ABOUT America's
sponsoring of Israel's admission
to the UN is premature. The
U. S. will not Oppose Israel's
application for UN membership.
U. S. de jure recognition of
Israel, which has been mysteri-
ously held up the past few
weeks, is not far off.
Growing attention in Israel to
such peace probleins, as eco-
nomics, finances, education and
governmental structure is the
real due to what the future
holds. Political debate is ram-
pant in Israel—a sure sign that
the general election and the es-
tablishment of a permanent
government is drawing close.
War talk in the land is giving
way to discussions about the
nature and character of the
government and the constitu-
tion.
While the people in charge of
defense and military affairs are
not relaxing in their efforts, the
scientists, edUcators, administra-
tors and fiscal experts are busy
framing the country's future.

TO HONOR VICTIMS
A MOVEMENT is afoot at

stein announced he would sell
the 340 homes but only to the
town's residents and at prices

eral Housing Authority.
The British missionary soci-
ety in Germany, "The Hebrew-
Christian Church," is busy fish-
ing for Jewish souls . . . The
head of its department caring
for the "victims of Nazism"' is
Victor Nussbaum, a fiery for-
mer Nazi.
Jewish students at the Uni-
versity of Prague decided to de-
vote two weeks of their vaca-
tion to a unique but sacred
task.
They will repair the Jewish
graves the Nazis desecrated,
cleait up the former ghetto at
Theresienstadt and place tomb-
stones on the graves of the
thousands of martyrs who per-
ished at the hands of the Ger-
mans.

'ANOTHER GERSNW1N'
AN EX-GI, PAUL Siegel, is
being hailed by Viennese music
critics as "another George
Gershwin" . .. Paul served five
years in the U. S. army, but
remained in Vienna after his
discharge.
If the New York Yankees win
the pennant a good deal of
credit will go to their Yiddish-
speaking pitching star—Ed Lo-
pat—who is not a Jew . . . Ed
was raised on the lower East
Side among Jews and he speaks
Yiddish fluently.
