S. Zionism There may be peace on Israel's borders, but there is no peace in American Zionist ranks, locally and nationally. When world Jewry has its best chance to bring its age- old dreams to fruition, there remain faction- alism, wrangling and self-seeking. • This disunity is one of the tragedies of Jewish life and the price we pay for Jewish individualism and loyalty to party creeds. It underscores once again the need for a merger of Zionist groups in the land as ad- vocated by Dr. Emanuel Neumann and this newspaper. It points up the urgency for the subordination of secondary programs to that of Zionism, pure and simple. Labor, orthodoxy and the myriad other ideologies which somehow hold priority in many a Zionist's thinking must take a back seat to the idea of the political State. Eco- nomic, religious and social ideologies must learn to play second fiddle if there is ever to be a permanent and successful State. * * * Disunity and dissension are so rife today that the National Jewish Post, one of Amer- ica's leading national Jewish news weeklies, headed its main story last week with the headline: U. S. Zionist Crisis; Unity Begin- ning to Crack Up as Israel Victory Nears. Then the paper gave the sordid story of the battling and name-calling and self-inter- est in Zionist ranks. And for all the bicker- ing, duplication and disunity on national lev- els, there are their counterparts on Inca! scales. Though its headlines pointed to the dis- unity, in its editorial columns the Post took the position that Dr. Neumann's invitation to the other Zionist groups, all of whom have contributed their share to the realiza- tion of the Jewish State, is an invitation for them to accept the hegemony of the ZOA, and is a demagogic appeal at best. This viewpoint overlooks the fact that the merger plan would abolish the ZOA which would become part of the overall organiza- tion, American Friends of Israel. This group would enlist the support of the masses who are not interested in the separatist ideologies but only in supporting a Jewish State. Unspoiled by factionalism, they could easily become the majority since only 10 percent of American Jews are dues-paying Zionists today, and the viewpoint of unity for Zionism's sake rather than labor's sake or orthodoxy's sake would be their controll- ing concept. * We do not agree with the Post that Dr. Neumann's invitation is "the height of Chutzpah." We think his idea is the most statesmanlike and courageous in Zionist thinking in long time. Dr. Neumann stands for solidarity and union. The Post still backs noxious and destructive disunity. Let us list some of the fights going on within American Israel as listed in the Post's single issue of July 30: 1. The battle between Hadassah and the Red Mogen Dovid over blood collections and ambulance donations. (IC Detroit, overlap- ping of activities is highlighted by the fact that Hadassah is conducting a campaign for new clothing for Israel and so are the Miz- rachi women and the Pioneer women. By uniting, more clothes could be collected and more Jews in Israel helped. But perish the thought; who wants to help Jews if we can't keep our independence? 2. Zionists-Revisionists are "engaged in a campaign in total yiolation of Zionist disci pline, backing the Irgun and attacking the Jewish State." 3. Mizrachi contemptuously rejects Dr. Neumann's plan and announces its own aid to Israel campaigns. 4. Bergson groups (American League for a Free Palestine) dramatize their campaign for funds and arms for Irgun. 5. Americans for Haganah dissolves and a successor group, American United for Is- rael, is repudiated by the WA with whose own subsidiary, Israel Equipment Project, it comes in conflict. (In Detroit, Israel Equip- ment Project and the Labor Zionist and Bnai Brith supported Materials for Palestine are rubbing one another's fur the wrong way to to the detriment of a united collection of DETROIT 26, MICR machinery and other heavy supplies for Is- rael.) And to the local scene we add these exhi- bitions of factionalism and pettiness: The ZOA board is trying to oust one of its mem- bers because he wrote a letter to the Chroni- cle attacking Ben Gurion for his handling of the Altalena incident, and Branch 5 of the Labor Zionist organization, a youth group, has announced it will picket all affairs spon- sored here for the benefit of Irgun. To all this we protest and cry shame! Let us all set aside our secondary objectives and consolidate as American Friends of Israel. Otherwise, when the war is over in Israel, the dissension will be so vast as to prevent any material aid to the fledgeling State. Shertok Makes Demands The Israeli government is assuming a new and more aggressive tone in its dealings with the UN, particularly with the mediator, Count Bernadotte. The change is justified in view of the fact that Israeli's former policy of compliance and 'compromise has been construed as weakness and has resulted in rulings and decisions that have been damaging to Is- rael. The new State is now in a position where it can remind the UN that it has proved itself superior in a• military sense to the com- bined forces of the seven Arab states. It can also point to the recent evidence of dis- unity and weakness in the Arab League which may shortly result in the collapse of the Arab war effort. Reports by Drew Pearson of an imminent alliance between Abdullah and Ibn Saud at the expense of Egypt and the other Moslem states further underscore the fact that the enemies of Israel have about shot their bolt and that peace with Israel would be the better part of valor. * * I Letters to the Editor FROM BB YOUTH Dear Editor: It is a pleasure and a privilege to have the opportunity of writ- ing this letter to you. We, the Detroit BBW-YM convention committee and the officers of the national organizations cannot ful- ly express our gratitude for the wonderful cooperation that your paper gave to us in pub- licizing our convention. In the words of our great leader, Henry ,Monsky "The To- morrow of American Jewry is Being Written in the Direction Given to and Taken by Jewish Youth Today." With the Chronicle devoting so much time, effort, and space in its issues, and with the com- plete cooperation of the entire Chronicle staff, we as Jewisn youth, have been given the di- rection, as stated by Monsky, by your paper and have taken the action as young Jewish adults in culminating a convention based on the "Role of the Young Jewish Adult, Locally, National- ly, Internationally, and jn rela- tionship to the New Slate of Israel." We hope that we have ful- filled the confidence that you have placed in us. Words are inadequate to express the feel- ings of the Detroit BBYM-YW to the Chronicle for the splendid job you did in publicizing the convention. CHARLOTTE WATERSTONE, HARRY MIRVIS, Co-Convention Chairmen. BOY ASKS UNITY Dear Editor: My family and I enjoy the Chronicle and, like the rest, read it from cover to cover, I would like to know more about our brothers in Africa and how they are getting along. I am glad that there is going to be a Zionist rally in which all sides can straighten out their differences. This is no time for arguments. This is a time for building. EDWIN HAMBURGER, 9231 Monterey. All this helps to explain why Moshe Sher- tok, the Israeli foreign minister, used un- ambiguous phraseology in informing Count Bernadotte that the UN partition decision giving Jerusalem an international status is no longer morally binding on Israel in view of the Arab onslaughts on the Holy City, the UN failure to prevent them and the heroic Jewish defense of the cit ► . While it is true that he did not say so in so many words, Shertok left little doubt the Jewish government expects to annex Jeru- salem to the Jewish State.
