free Israeli movements to Jeru-
salem over the main road.
Fighting on Syrian territory
after the truce hour had passed,
Jewish warriors fought for the
hill village of Assayat from
which they had been driven by
Syrian armor in post-truce as-
saults. Assayat is the deepest
point in Arab territory pene-
trated by the Jewish armies.

ATTACK IN JERUSALEM
The Arab Legion continued
to ignore the Jerusalem truce
launching several infantry at-
tacks against the Jewish posi-
tions. Israeli headquarters re-
ported, however, that not one
inch of ground in Jerusalem
had been lost to Abdullah since
the capture of the Old City.
Earlier in the week, Arab
Legion mortar and artillery
shells dropped in heavy clusters
for"as long as 30 minutes at a
time, and civilian casualties were
heavy because few persons were
trying to take cover in view
of the reported truce.

HINTS AT CHANGES
There has been no official re-
action here to the declaration
of Bernadotte that he was em-
powered tinder the Security
Council's terms of reference to
suggest "adjustments" in the
original partition decision.
Count Bernadotte stated that
he hoped for a final settlement
without the need of greatly
modifying or abandoning the
General Assembly's partition
plan. The U.N. mediator also
asserted that he believed a pleb-
iscite to be the most "demo-

like the Palestine issue but that
he did net know "if this is prac-
